ESSENTIAL QUESTION: How do historians learn about the past?
In a sense, a historian acts like a detective or private investigator gathering clues.
To find information about the past, historians rely heavily on two kinds of sources:
primary and secondary.

The art of knowing social studies is knowing how to interpret different types of data, which can be presented in the form of a map, graph, or chart. This skill is also important for success on the STAAR Grade 8 Social Studies Test. Different types of data include:
Maps
Bar and Line Graphs
Pie Charts
Tables
Timelines
Political Cartoons
A map is a drawing of a geographic area. The link above is map reading skills for beginners and advanced map readers.
There are many types of maps, for example road maps, physical maps, and political maps, to name a few.

A photograph is a picture made by a camera. Archival photos are images from the past, some go back to the 1800's. Photography was created in the 1800's.
