Avilés es una ciudad de origen medieval y de gran tradición marinera e industrial. Es la tercera ciudad más importante y poblada de Asturias, con 83.000 habitantes.

Avilés is a city of medieval origin, marine and industrial tradition. It is the third most important and populated city of Asturias, with 83,000 inhabitants.

Para conocer la cuidad es recomendable dejar el coche en el Parking del hotel y recorrerla caminando, ya que las principales calles son peatonales y solo permiten el acceso en coche a residentes y taxistas.

To know the city we recommend you to leave the car in the hotel car park and walking around because the main streets are pedestrian and only allow access by car to residents and taxi drivers.

A escasos 200m del hotel, saliendo a mano izquierda y tomando la calle Ruiz Gómez que sube para atrás, donde está situada la Oficina de Información Turística y acceso subterráneo a uno de los parkings públicos de la ciudad y llegamos a la Plaza España o también conocida como El Parche, donde está ubicado el Edificio del Ayuntamiento y el Palacio del Marqués de Ferrera que en la actualidad alberga un hotel. Desde esta plaza se puede comenzar la ruta por el casco antiguo, ya que de ella, parten de manera radial las cinco principales calles que lo conforman.

At 200 meters from the hotel, on the left you can take Ruiz Gómez street where you will find our tourist information office and access to one of the underground public car parks of the city, then you will arrrive to España Square (Plaza España), a square also knows like El Parche there, you will find the city hall and the Marqués Ferrera´s Palace (El Palacio de Marqués Ferrera) which is currently a hotel. From this square you can star the old town´s route and since from it you can visit the five mains streets of the city.

Si estamos en el centro de la plaza y tenemos de frente el edifico del Ayuntamiento, girando en dirección contraria las agujas del reloj, la primera calle que encontramos es la Calle de la Fruta donde se encuentra uno de los edificios más antiguos de la ciudad, el Palacio de Camposagrado y que va a dar al Parque del Muelle.

If you are in the center of the square you will see in front of you, the city hall and turning counterclockwise the first street that you are going to find is the fruit street (Calle de la Fruta), where you will find one of the oldest buildings in the city, the Palace of Camposagrado and which will give to the Pier Park (Parque del Muelle).

La segunda sería La calle de la Cámara, las más larga de la ciudad y principal calle de compras. Al llegar prácticamente a su tramo medio donde termina la parte peatonal de la calle, a mano derecha está una de las entradas a la Plaza Hermanos Orbón donde está situado el mercado de Abastos y donde cada lunes se monta el mercado semanal o como se conoce aquí La Plaza.

The second street would be Calle de la Cámara, the longest in the city and main shopping street. Arriving at the center of the street where the pedestrian part of the street ends, on the right hand is one of the entrances to the Hermanos Orbón Square (Plaza Hermanos Orbón) where the market of Abastos is located and every Monday are the weekly market, here we know like La Plaza.

La siguiente sería La calle San Francisco, una de las más concurridas de la ciudad gracias a la gran variedad de restaurante, donde escoger entre comida tradicional Asturiana o restaurante de comida fusión. Continuando por esta calle y cruzando la Plaza Domingo Acebal vamos a dar a la Calle Galiana donde podrán encontrar, una de las puertas al Parque de Ferrera, antiguo jardín del palacio del Marqués de Ferrera y principal zona verde de la ciudad. Siguiendo por esta calle vamos a dar a la famosa Plaza del Carbayedo con su icónico hórreo asturiano, muy concurrida a última hora de la tarde y por la noche por ser una de las principales zonas de vinos y pubs.

The next street is San Francisco Street (San Francisco Street), one of the busiest streets in the city because it is full of different types of restaurant, where to choose between traditional Asturian food or fusion restaurant. Continuing along this street and crossing the Domingo Acebal square (Plaza Domingo Acebal) we will arrived to Galiana street (Calle Galiana) where you can find one of the doors to the Ferrera Park (Parque Ferrera), old garden of the palace of The Marques de Ferrera (Palacio del Marqués de Ferrera) and main green area of the city. Following this street you will reach the famous square of Carbayedo (Plaza del Carbayedo) with it´s iconic Asturian hórreo, very busy in the late afternoon and at night because it is one of the main wine and pub areas.

Otra de las calles que sale del ayuntamiento es La Calle de Rivero, llamativa por su empedrado, donde encontrarán otra de las entradas al Parque de Ferrera y la fuente de los Caños junto a la Capilla de San Pedro famosa por su pequeño tamaño.

Another of the streets that leaves the town hall is Rivero Street (La Calle de Rivero), striking for its cobblestones, where you can find another entrance to Ferrera Park (Parque Ferrera) and the fountain of the Caños (Fuente de los Caños) is located next to the Chapel of San Pedro famous for it´s small size.

Finalmente las calle de La Ferrería que junto a la antes mencionada Calle de la Fruta y la pequeña Calle del Sol forma la famosa “H” donde cada año por las fiestas de San Agustin (28 de Agosto) se ubica el mercado medieval tomando también otras pequeñas calles adyacentes. En esta calle está situado el Museo de Historia Urbana de Avilés.

Finally the streets of La Ferrería (Calle de la Ferrería) which is next to the street de la fruta (Calle de la Fruta) and the small Soll Street (Calle del Sol) forms the famous "H" where every year for the festivities of San Agustin (August 28th) the medieval market is located, also taking other small adjacent streets. In this street is located the Museum of Urban History (Museo de Historia Urbana) of Avilés.

Otra de las principales zonas antiguas de la ciudad, aunque no está en el cogollo principal del casco antiguo pero si a escasos 5 minutos caminando de él, es el Barrio de Sabugo, antiguo barrio de pescadores que se encontraba fuera de las murallas que protegían la ciudad en la época medieval. Es la principal zona de sidrerías, y destaca la Plaza del Carbayo.

Another of the main old areas of the city, although it is not in the center of the old town but if just 5 minutes walk from it, is the Neighborhood of Sabugo (Barrio de Sabugo), old fishing district that was outside the walls that protected the city in medieval times. It is the main area of cider houses, and highlights the Carbayo square (Plaza del Carbayo).

Una vez que haya visto la parte antigua de la ciudad, se puede visitar la parte más moderna de la ciudad también a pocos metros del hotel. Justo en frente del hotel, tenemos la antigua plaza de pescado (Plaza del Pescado) desde donde cruzar una imponente pasarela, vamos a dar al paseo de la Ría, lugar que muchos deportistas usan bien para correr o pasear, ya que desde él, pueden llegar al Puerto Deportivo. Cruzando un pequeño puente de colores que encontramos en el paseo, vamos a dar al Centro Niemeyer, única obra en España del arquitecto brasileño Oscar Niemeyer, en el que podemos disfrutar durante todo el año de numerosas exposiciones, cine, ponencias, obras de teatro, y de las principales actuaciones musicales que tienen lugar en la ciudad.

Once you have seen the old part of the city, you can visit the most modern part of the city also a few meters from the hotel. Right in front of the hotel, we have the old fish square (Plaza del Pescado) from where crossing an imposing walkway, you will reach the Paseo Marítimo, a place that many athletes use for running or walking, from there they can reach the Marina. Crossing a small colored bridge that you will find on the seafront are the Niemeyer Center, the only work in Spain by the Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer, in which we can enjoy throughout the year numerous exhibitions, cinema, presentations, plays, and the main musical performances that take place in the city.

Avilés presume de una inmejorable ubicación ya que está a escasos 15 minutos en coche del Aeropuerto de Asturias, y a menos de 30 minutos de Oviedo y Gijón, las otras dos principales ciudades de la región.

Avilés has an unbeatable location because it is 15 minutes by car from Asturias Airport, and less than 30 minutes from Oviedo and Gijón, the other two main cities of Asturias.

Aunque Avilés no dispone de playa propiamente dicha, la Playa de Salinas es la más famosa de la zona y está a menos de 5km. y podemos encontrar bonitos pueblos pesqueros como Candás y Luanco a solo 20 minutos en coche.

Although Avilés has no beach, The beach of Salinas is the most famous in the area and has less than 5 km and we can find beautiful fishing villages like Candás and Luanco just a 20-minute drive away.
