• 1. We will discuss the Honors Meiosis Project Expectations and the technical aspects you need for the project.

  2. The rest of the block will be spent practicing the techniques needed to perform the project.

Assignment

• 1. Complete the Meiosis and Mitosis Review assignment, given in Google Classroom

  2. Finish reading and taking notes on Module 9, Lesson 2 Meiosis and Sexual Reproduction.

  3. I strongly suggest that you begin making a vocabulary study tool (flash cards, Quizlet, etc.) this unit deals with a lot of vocabulary, especially words that begin with the letter "c".

     1. • Begin prepping for your unit test.

Focus: Meiosis Review

Bell Question

• 1. Login to Gizmos and launch the Meiosis Gizmo (NOT the Meowsis STEM Case)

     1. • Select female and  work your way through the Gizmo. This is called oogenesis, the formation of an egg cell.

          1. • How is oogenesis different than spermatogenesis, the formation of a sperm cell?

Today's In-class Tasks

• 1. We will review the stages of meiosis. Two new terms that will be introduced are spermatogenesis and oogenesis, make sure you record what they mean

     1. • A diagram of both is included below in Image 1

  2. We will then discuss aneuploidy with the Extra or Missing Chromosomes webpage and chromosomal mutations with the Chromosomal Rearrangements webpage

     1. • Aneuploidy will also be discussed using the two video below.

        • Examples of Aneuploidy

          1. Monosomy Disorders

             • 1. Turner's Syndrome (1 - X)

          2. Trisomy Autosome Disorders

             • 1. Down Syndrome ( 3 - 21)

               2. Edwards Syndrome ( 3 - 18)

  3. We will then discuss the Meowsis STEM Case and the results of this case.

  4. Anytime remaining in class will be given to students to work through the Meiosis & Mitosis Review assignment, given in Google Classroom.

     1. • Discuss what independent assortment is.

        • Determine what phases of meiosis that independent assortment takes place.

  2. We will then discuss a meiosis project that involves stop-action video and WeVideo

     1. • surface area of each cube (each square on all 3 cubes are equal and each side of a square is 1cm)

        • the volume of each cube

  2. Read the following short article: Why Must a Cell Divide?

  3. Be prepared to explain the link between #1 of this Bell Question with #2 of the Bell Question

• 1. After discussing why body cells divide, I will lecture on Significant Chromosomal Events in Life & the differences between Mitosis and Meiosis.  Here is a copy of his lecture notes.

  2. We will then move into an activity on Meiosis with the chromosome beads.

     1. • Afterwards, students will review what happens meiosis by completing the Meiosis Review Assignment in Google Classroom

  3. If any time remains, students will work through the Gizmos Meiosis Gizmo

Focus (Learning Intentions): Cell Cycle and Cancer - The Role of CDK Complexes / Meiosis

Bell Question

• 1. With the members of your group identify the role of the following:

     1. • cyclins

        • CDKs

        • target proteins

        • Which molecule, of the three above, is an enzyme?

        • Looking at the graphs below, why do you think the level of cyclins in the cells fluctuates

        • Which molecule, of the three above, can cause cancer if damaged?

Today's In-class Tasks

• 1. We will review the answers to the Eukaryotic Cell and Cancer Student Worksheet.

  2. We will then discuss the regulation of the cell cycle. This is additional information which is not included in your book. You will need to know the following:

     1. • How cyclins, CDKs and target proteins work to control the cell cycle

        • What cancer is.

        • How cancer can be the result of a malfunctioning cyclin, CDK or target protein

  3. After discussing the regulation of the cell cycle and cancer, we will begin an assignment on Meiosis.  Go to the Bioman page on Snurfle Meiosis & Genetics. No awful games, these are good interactive tutorials.

     1. • Complete the Meiosis Interactive. When you are finished, return to the homepage and click on the scoresheet link (See below).

        • Take a screen shot of your final score. YOU MUST HAVE A SCORE OF 90% OR HIGHER -IF NOT, DO IT AGAIN.

        • Your screen shot MUST have your name printed on it for you to receive credit; see my screen shot below.

        • Submit your screen shot to Google Classroom

  4. Go to the Bioman page on Snurfle Meiosis & Genetics 2

     1. • Complete the Crossing Over challenge.  When you are finished, return to the homepage and click on the scoresheet link (See below).

        • Take a screen shot of your final score. YOU MUST HAVE A SCORE OF 90% OR HIGHER -IF NOT, DO IT AGAIN.

          • • This is a precautionary step, just in case you lose this score. Saving your scores will ensure both will be there at the end.

        • Complete the Independent Assortment challenge.  When you are finished, return to the homepage and click on the scoresheet link (See below).

• 1. Place your finished copy of the Eukaryotic Cell and Cancer  assignment in the black tray at the front of the room.

  2. We will then go over the Metabolism Test.

• 1. Students who are not finished with the Mitosis Study Lab will finish it.

  2. Students who are done will read this article on Mast Cell Cancer in Dogs. Be able to discuss:

     1. • What are Mast Cells?

        • Why are Mast Cell Tumors referred to as "The Great Pretender"?

        • What happens when a tumor metastasizes and why can this be dangerous?

  3. Students will then begin the Mitosis and Cancer activity, given in Google Classroom.

  4. Once all students are finished with the Mitosis Study Lab, we will go over this lab.

  5. With any remaining time we will discuss the  Mitosis and Cancer activity and the Eukaryotic Cell and Cancer  assignment.

Assignment

• 1. If not finished with either the Mitosis and Cancer activity or the Eukaryotic Cell and Cancer  assignment, finish it.

     1. • 4 red magnet, bead strands of equal length (the same number of beads above and below the centromere (magnet))

        • 4 yellow magnet, beads strands of equal length (the same number of beads above and below the centromere (magnet))

        • 2 plastic pieces (centrosomes)

        • 1 piece of chalk

• 1. After going through the the mitosis activity, lab partners will then begin working on the Mitosis Study Lab.

     1. • If students finish Part 1 of the Mitosis Study Lab, they should then begin Part 3, not Part 2.

  2. Read the Learn.Genetics.org page How do scientists read chromosomes? This includes the sections on centromeres.

  3. Read the opening paragraph to the Make a Karyotype page and then complete the Karyotype.

Today's In-class Tasks

• 1. We will discuss karyotypes, homologous chromosomes, haploid vs diploid cells, the cell cycle and the steps to mitosis

     1. • Concepts will be discussed using my DNA Structure & Cell Division Lecture Notes

  2. We will review the steps of mitosis with an interactive, physical activity lead by the teacher. You will need PER TABLE:

     1. • 4 red magnet, bead strands of equal length (the same number of beads above and below the centromere (magnet))

        • 4 yellow magnet, beads strands of equal length (the same number of beads above and below the centromere (magnet))
