Focus: Genetics Assessment Prep / The structure of DNA

• 1. Look over the study guide above and identify the thing(s)/concept(s) most confusing to you.

Today's In-class Tasks:

1. We will discuss the most confusing/challenging concepts, identified by students

2. After our Q & A session you can do the following:

   1. • Complete all missing work for the Genetics Unit

      • Prep for the Genetics Test.

        1. • This could be working on your unit notes and/or study tools.

           • Studying with a friend (keep the off topic discussions to a minimum)

      • Complete the DNA Videos and Building DNA assignment, given in Google Classroom.

        1. • This is a large assignment and is not due until Thursday 5/11; you will need to chisel away at it or give yourself a chunk of time.

• 1. Prepare for our Genetics test by working through the study guide above.

     1. • Genetics Test will be on Tuesday, May 9

  2. Complete reading and taking notes on all of Module 10

  3. Work on the DNA Videos and Building DNA assignment, given in Google Classroom.

Focus: Review of Non-Mendelian Genetics / Pedigrees

Bell Question

• 1. With your partners, complete numbers 1 & 2 of the Dihybrid Cross Worksheet, given in class.

  2. Baldness is a recessive sex-linked trait. A bald man and a woman, homozygous dominant for the trait, have a daughter. When the daughter gets older she has a son with a man who is not bald. What is the percent chance that, out of just male probabilities,  the grandson eventually becomes bald like his grandfather?

Today's In-class Tasks

• 1. We will go over the answers to the Bell Questions and then go over the answers to the Dihybrid Worksheet, Incomplete Dominance & Co-dominance Worksheet, Multiple Alleles worksheet and Sex-Linked Crosses Worksheet

  2. We will then watch the Amoeba Sisters video on Pedigrees, included below.

  3. Students will then begin the Pedigree assignment, given in Google Classroom. 

     1. • This Pedigree Lesson is from a biology curriculum which we do not follow. Disregard information about previous lessons. I found enough value in the lesson despite the references.

  2. Continue reading and taking notes on Module 10

     1. • We will bounce around Module 10 so move through the various lessons.

Focus: Review of Non-Mendelian Genetics: Incomplete Dominance, Co-Dominance & Multiple Alleles, Sex-linked Traits & Dihybrid Crosses 

Bell Question

• 1. We will start class with a genetics test for a specific trait.

  2. Students will the read the following article on the PTC gene

     1. • How does this gene demonstrate WHY an allele can be dominant or recessive.

Today's In-class Tasks

• 1. We will discuss the results of the genetic test and the answer to the Bell Question

  2. We will then review the non-Mendelian genetics traits and the assignments given the week before break.

     1. • Here is a copy of Non-Mendelian Lecture notes I will briefly go over.

        • We will then go over the answers to the Incomplete Dominance and Co-dominance Worksheet that was given for homework.

Assignment

• 1. If not done already, complete any of the genetics cross assignments, given in Google Classroom.

Focus: Incomplete Dominance, Codominance, Dihybrid, Multiple Allele and Sex-Linked Crosses

This is a 2 day agenda due to students missing class on Tuesday for the PSAT and me being out on Thursday. The Amoeba Sisters videos will serve as tutorials about different types of genetic crosses and how to work through genetic problems on these types of crosses.

• Follow the order of assignments given below.

Bell Question

• 1. In Google Classroom the answer keys to the Mendel Worksheet and Monohybrid Cross worksheet has been sent to all students that completed the assignments. Check your answers.

Today's In-class Tasks

• 1. Watch the first half of the Amoeba Sisters Incomplete Dominance & Codominance video.

     1. • You do not need to go beyond 3:30 because we are not covering Polygenic Traits and Epistasis yet.

  2. Complete the Incomplete and Codominance assignment, given in Google Classroom.

  3. Watch the entire Amoeba Sisters Dihybrid Crosses video

  4. Complete the Dihybrid Crosses assignment, given in Google Classroom.

  5. Watch the entire Amoeba Sisters Multiple Allele and ABO Blood Types video.

  6. Complete the Multiple Alleles assignment, given in Google Classroom.

  3. Students will then complete the Guided Genetics Notes as we discuss Mendel and the key concepts in Module 10, Lesson 1

  4. Students will use the remainder of the block to complete the Monohybrid Cross Worksheet, given in Google Classroom
