Prepare for a Unit 7 Test on Thursday, 4/2
Place your Topics 10 & 11 Guided Notes and Benefit of Schools assignment on the podium
You will be given a hard copy of a gene analysis lab using BLAST. This is a mandatory AP lab. You do need to access the digital version of the lab in Google Classroom though.
You need the digital version to copy and paste an amino acid sequence into the data base.Ā
The pictures are more easily seen on the digital copy as well.
Work through the lab sheet, it is a step-by-step process that takes time.
If you struggle at all, consult with your partners, make judgement calls and power through as best as possible.
The gist of the lab is to analyze a protein sequence of amino acids in different organisms and make a cladogram based on the results
What does not get finished in class is homework.
Complete the BLAST Analysis lab Due Tuesday 3/31
Complete the Unit 7 Topic 13 Lecture Notes Due Tuesday 3/31
The video is in Google Classroom
Ā Complete the Phylogeny assignment. Due Tuesday 3/31
The entire Unit 7 is covered Chapters 19 - 23 of the book
Read and take any additional notes needed
Use the Unit 7 Objectives and Understandings to guide your note-taking
The schedule for the remainder of this unit is as follows:
Friday: BLAST Lab / Topic 13 Guided Notes assignment / finish Phylogeny assignment
Tuesday: Unit Review
Thursday: Unit 7 Exam (4/2)
Place your Topic 9 and Evidence for Evolution Assignment on the podium
While I go record the homework, students will work on the Phylogeny assignment
We will first go over the Unit 6 Assessment
We will then discuss the Evidence of Evolution assignment and the evidence for evolution.
Students will then check their Topic 9 assignment with the answer key.
We will begin to discuss speciation and students will begin working on the Benefit of Schools (fish) assignment, pages 1 - 3
Complete the front (Secrets of Schooling) and back (Skipping School) sides of the first page of the Benefit of Schools assignment, Due Friday, 3/27
It would be best to complete the Secrets of Schooling, move on to the lecture notes, and then do the Skipping School.
Complete the Unit 7 Topics 10 & 11 Lecture Notes, Due Friday, 3/27
The video is in Google Classroom
Ā Continue working on the Phylogeny assignment. Due Tuesday 4/1
The entire Unit 7 is covered Chapters 19 - 23 of the book
Read and take any additional notes needed
Use the Unit 7 Objectives and Understandings to guide your note-taking
The schedule for the remainder of this unit is as follows:
Wednesday: Fish Schooling Assignment / Topics 10 & 11 Guided Notes assignment /begin Phylogeny assignment
Friday: BLAST Lab / Topic 13 Guided Notes assignment / finish Phylogeny assignement
Tuesday: Unit Review
Thursday: Unit 7 Exam (4/2)
Video 1: Secrets of Schooling
Video 2: Marine vs Benthic Lake Sticklebacks
Place the Hardy-Weinberg Chi Square assignment and the Population Genetics assignment on the podium.
PLEASE ADD THIS TO YOUR NOTES:
p2, 2pq and q2 refer to GENOTYPES (often in percent)
If you are given a recessive phenotype, you therefore know the recessive genotype - q2
If you know q2 you then need to take the square root of q2 to get q
Once you have q you can determine p
p & q refer to ALLELES (frequency)
Students will check their Hardy Weinberg Review and Population Genetics assignments with the anser keys
Please add any questions you have regarding these assignments to the Unit 7 Questions document I will address a few questions today but I willĀ address the remaining H-W-E questions next class.
While I am going through homework, students will work on the Evidence for Evolution assignment.
We will go over the homework and then finish discussing slides 1 - 12 of these Unit 7 Key Concepts lecture notes.
The remaining of the block will be spent working on the Evidence for Evolution assignment.
Complete the Unit 7 Topic 9 Lecture Notes & begin working on the Phylogeny assignment, included in the packet. Due Tuesday 3/18
The video is in Google Classroom
The entire Unit 7 is covered Chapters 19 - 23 of the book
Read and take any additional notes needed
Use the Unit 7 Objectives and Understandings to guide your note-taking
The schedule for the remainder of this unit is as follows:
Wednesday: Review Evidence of Evolution / Explore the behavior of Fish Schooling / Topics 10 & 11 Guided Notes assignment
Friday: BLAST Lab / Topic 13 Guided Notes assignment
Tuesday: Unit Review
Thursday: Unit 7 Exam (4/2)
Video 1: Unit 7 Topic 9 Video Lecture
Before moving on to #2, discuss this with your group members:
What was the concept trying to be expressed in Activity A of the H-W-E Gizmo task?
What was the concept trying to be expressed in Activity B of the H-W-E Gizmo task?
What was the concept trying to be expressed in Activity C of the H-W-E Gizmo task?
At the end of your table, towards the center of the room, make 3 piles:
Topics 6 - 8 Guided Lecture NotesĀ
H-W-E Gizmo Student Sheet on the podium
Hardy Weinberg assignment
I will collect papers and pass out answer sheets for Topics 1 - 5 as well as The Hardy-Weinberg Chi Square assignment
We will discuss the Hardy-Weinberg assignments
We will the discuss the key concepts of Topics 1 - 5.
I will be using slides 1 - 12 of these Unit 7 Key Concepts lecture notes during the discussion
The remaining of the block will be spent working on the Hardy-Weinberg Chi Square assignment and the Population Genetics assignment
Complete the Hardy-Weinberg Chi Square and the Population Genetics assignments
Add questions to the Unit 7 Questions document in Google Classroom
Use the Unit 7 Objectives and Understandings to guide your note-taking
Place your Unit 7 Guided Notes assignments on the podium; make two piles.
Please go to your lab station and replenish the pipette tips in the tip rack.
Take out your calculator and answer the following question: Sixteen percent of a population is unable to taste PTC. These non-tasters are recessive for the tasting gene. Solve the following:
What percentage of individuals in the population are tasters?
What is the frequency of the dominant allele in the population and the frequency of the recessive allele in the population?
What percentage of the population are heterozygous for the trait?
Today we will focus on the Hardy Weinberg formula.
We will watch the Bozeman video below on Hardy Weinberg and work through the problems at the end of the video
Students will then login to Gizmos and we, as a class, will work through the Hardy-Weinberg Gizmo

Students can work on the Gizmos Worksheet in pairs
Students will then begin a Hardy-Weinberg and Chi Square assignment.
If not done in class, finish the Gizmo.
