On Thursday we will finish going over the last concepts on the  Unit 7 Key Concepts lecture notes and go over the BLAST lab.

Afterwards, students will begin the Unit 7 test.

Students will finish the Unit 7 test on Monday.

You will be given a hard copy of a gene analysis lab using BLAST. This is a mandatory AP lab. You do need to access the digital version of the lab in Google Classroom though.

1. 1. • You need the digital version to copy and paste an amino acid sequence into the data base. 

      • The pictures are more easily seen on the digital copy as well.

      • Work through the lab sheet, it is a step-by-step process that takes time.

        • • If you struggle at all, consult with your partners, make judgement calls and power through as best as possible.

            1. • The gist of the lab is to analyze a protein sequence of amino acids in different organisms and make a cladogram based on the results

      • What does not get finished in class is homework.

We will then discuss the Evidence of Evolution assignment and the evidence for evolution.

We will begin to discuss speciation and students will begin working on the Benefit of Schools (fish) assignment, pages 1 - 3

1. Complete the front (Secrets of Schooling) and back (Skipping School) sides of the first page of the Benefit of Schools assignment, Due Friday, 3/27

   1. • It would be best to complete the Secrets of Schooling, move on to the lecture notes, and then do the Skipping School.

1. • p2, 2pq and q2 refer to GENOTYPES (often in percent)

     1. • If you are given a recessive phenotype, you therefore know the recessive genotype - q2

          1. • If you know q2 you then need to take the square root of q2 to get q

               1. • Once you have q you can determine p

   • p & q refer to ALLELES (frequency)

While I am going through homework, students will work on the Evidence for Evolution assignment.

We will go over the homework and then finish discussing slides 1 - 12 of these Unit 7 Key Concepts lecture notes.

The remaining of the block will be spent working on the Evidence for Evolution assignment.

Take out your calculator and answer the following question: Sixteen percent of a population is unable to taste PTC. These non-tasters are recessive for the tasting gene. Solve the following:

1. • What percentage of individuals in the population are tasters?

   • What is the frequency of the dominant allele in the population and the frequency of the recessive allele in the population?

   • What percentage of the population are heterozygous for the trait?

Today we will focus on the Hardy Weinberg formula.

1. 1. • We will watch the Bozeman video below on Hardy Weinberg and work through the problems at the end of the video

      • Students will then login to Gizmos and we, as a class, will work through the Hardy-Weinberg Gizmo

          • Students can work on the Gizmos Worksheet in pairs

      • Students will then begin a Hardy-Weinberg and Chi Square assignment.
