AP Biology is a prescribed curriculum created and assessed by CollegeBoard. It is designed as a college biology class and all students will conclude the course by taking the AP Biology Exam. The units and timeline for the course are given in the KHS AP Biology Calendar.
As listed on the KHS AP Biology Calendar, each unit has a target endpoint. We need to keep to this outline as we only have 6 additional classes after the last unit and the May 5th AP Biology Test.
The 6 additional class blocks serve as a built-in cushion, as we will most likely lose class time due to weather and school events that impact our meeting times.
In order to maintain our course pace, students will be expected to work independently through the textbook, addressing the Learning Objectives for each unit.
Much of the content of this course is similar to the Honors Biology curriculum. There are higher level and additional concepts in the AP curriculum that were not taught during Honors Biology. I need to dedicate in-class, content discussions to review prior content and new learning. It is expected that students will come to these classes with questions about prior concepts that were previously taught. If there is no student engagement during review of previous content, I will move forward.
Students who are coming from a CP Biology Class: If you took CP Biology you are at a slight disadvantage because the Honors Curriculum is more rigorous than the CP Curriculum. This does NOT mean you can not be successful in AP Biology, you just need to do the following:
Stay up with the reading and review work.
ASK Questions during class
See me if you need concept clarification or tutoring. If you are putting the time into the class, I will make sure I am there to help.
There are 13 labs recommended by CollegeBoard and we are expected to conduct at least 10 of them.
All 13 labs are included on the KHS AP Biology Calendar
Twenty five percent of our time together should be spent in lab. This further emphasizes the need for independent work regarding text reading, note taking and questions.
I will not expect students to submit formal lab reports; instead students will take a lab quiz at the conclusion of each lab.
Lab Quizzes will be announced
Students will be expected to keep a separate lab notebook, which can be used when taking lab quizzes. The following information should be included in your lab notebook for every lab:
Title of Lab
Purpose/Objective of Lab
General steps of lab. You do NOT need to have a list of procedures but you should record the general things we did and why we did them.
Results or Expected Results. What data did we get? If our data was off, what were we expecting.
Tables and Graphs
Conclusion and connection to curriculum
You can not combine your class notebook with your lab notebook; they need to be 2 separate notebooks.
Only lab notebooks can be used on lab quizzes.
If you forget your lab notebook on the day of a quiz you will get a big ole "Que Lastima" from me.
You can not substitute loose leaf papers for your notebook, nor can you use another student's notebook.
You will be given homework assignments but the assignment load from me will be light. The reason for the light workload is because you will be expected to stay up on the reading and notes.
When homework is given it is expected to be done on time.
If not done on time you will have one additional block to get it into me for full credit.
If you do not submit an assignment by the time the second class begins, you will only be able to receive 1/2 credit.
No unit late work will be accepted after the unit exam.
