You may be surprised to learn that ELs in U.S. public schools speak over 400 different languages. In 2021 there were an estimated five million ELLs enrolled in US schools. Although data collection is incomplete in many states, the vast majority have seen an increase in ELL/MLL enrollment in the last few years. This is expected to continue.
