Why the grass is really greener on the other side

The Grass is Greener on the other side: When seeking a picnic spot, one notices that where one is the grass is thin and the brown earth dominated the green of the grass, but the grass is greener elsewhere; of course when one goes elsewhere, the same is true.

Indeed the grass is always greener on the other side.

Why? Simply because when looking at distant grass one sees each blade of grass from the side-view, and so one sees the broadness of each blade, and since there is grass in all directions, there are always blades of green wherever one looks; in contrast, when one views the grass at one’s feet from the vantage point of one’s height, one sees only the top-view of the grass tips, and so most of the area in one's view is brownish ground.

The moral is: Everyone sees the imperfections in their own life, but since many of these imperfections are visible only from the inside, they are not evident to others. As a result, someone else's life might seem better to you than your own, but only because you don't see it from their perspective; and they may see your life as being better than theirs for the same reason.

So if you feel others' lives are better than yours, ask them what they think of their life and what they think of yours, and you might be surprised to find that you are much better off being you than you thought.

…………..

Physics additions: Of course as with the ‘Copernican principle’ in cosmology, things look the same, a uniform distribution, from all vantage points, but locally the distribution is not so uniform. Indeed the grass is always greener on the other side.

If grass were distributed in three dimensions around our location, even if it was placed edgewise, all pointing at us, if there was enough grass one would also see only green.

“You don’t know what you have until it’s gone”: my insight has a converse or implication: that one cannot know what one will feel until encountering the actual situation, eg one may think one would fight bravely against a lion, wereas our nature may be to freeze at the sight of one ready to attack, paralyzed by frea rather than galvanized.

 Grass is greener

 Don’t know what you have til its gone

 A stitch in time saves nine: it is our nature to ignore problems when they are small, but these tend

to grow; why do we ignore it? Bec it is work to fix, and we push it off or think it is fine as is. But

if we now can focus on the amount of effort or trouble it will be later, then that will weigh on our

minds so much that we will summon up the determination to take care of it now, ie it is a a

suggestion of a technique how to overcome the natural tendency to ignore things when they are

still small.

1) "The Picnic"

Let's make a picnic!

We'll get a blanket and sit on it and eat sandwhiches.

Yeah....let's find a good spot in the meadow to put down the blanket, not on rocks and dirt, on nice grass.

Great idea, let's look for the really thich green grass and put a blanket down to sit on it and have lunch.

So X's Dad who worked from his home office packed them all a lunch, and off they went.

They ran to the meadow....and began to hunt for the greenest grass.

It's kind of yucky here, where is it greenest? .

Look, shouted Y, there, on the other side of the meadow, the grass there is greenest!

They all ran off to the other sid eof the meadow, shouting excitedly.

However when they got there.....it was not green after all...

Hey, something's wrong they said, it's not green at all, it's kind of yucky here.

How did that happen?

Maybe we ran in a circle said F.

Yes, we must've.

So they looked around again to find the greenest spot.

There shouted M. Yes, there pointed L. And off they ran.

T was the first to arrive, excitedly shouting "I'm first, I'm first at the greenest grass". But when the rest of them joined him, they began to yell angrily at him, what do you mean, why did you lead us here, this is not where it's greenst?!

What?! T exclaimed. I didn't lead you here.

Oh yeah you did aid R. You were in front of us the whole time!

Yeah said T, of course I was. I was just the fastest one of all of us, and so I was ahead of everyone the whole time, and so I was the first to get here, but I didn;t lead you!

Hmmm they agreed sheepishly, you're right. So how did we get here?

Well said G, didn;t M and L point here?

Yes the rest of them shouted, it's your fault!

Hey wait a minute said L. Yeah said M, we pointed first, but you all looked and agreed that it was the greneest, so don;y blame us!

Yeah said L.

Hmmm the rest of the pack said, they'e right. So how did this happen!?

Maybe we tod on it and made it yucky, So they sneak up on the grass slowly....still the same result.

Well, said H, let's find the greenest patch of grass, we'll make sure we all agree, and then I'll stay here and watch how you run, to make sure you are running in a striaght line towards the greenest patch. So they looked, they pointed, they agreed, and they ran. And they were disappointed again - it wasn;t green at all, it was kinda yucky.!

"It must be the Aliens" said K, they're kidnapping us and putting us on the non-green parts. Yeah, they're turning the green grass brown with a ray gun said V!

Hey, you guys, shouted H, is it green?

No they shouted. its yucky.

But that's impossible said H, I watched you run, it was straight to the greenest patch!

.....etc.

so leave one of us here and the rest run over to H. So they did.

N stands in the middle of the field and shouts out so on which side is the grass greenest? and the two groups point and shout "the grass is greener on the other side".

they investigate, think, ponder.....

they go to school....see the chairs, the backs are blue, the seats are red, from afar it looks like a phalanx of blue, from close it is mostly red.... they realize the secret...the principle....projection etc.

Application: situation which can be described by gass is greener: They say "yeah, it seemed better, but it isn't, just like we thought the grass is greener on the other side!".

Then they saw..."Yup" hey said, "the grass is always greener on the other side"...and they all laughed 'til they fell on the ground.....
