1. Watch the first 20:30 of this video on the Ottomans. Answer the questions below as you watch.

2. Then read and annotate pages 29-31 in your reader on the rise of the Ottomans. Pay attention to political, economic, sociological, and cultural factors that led to their rise and prominence.

As you watch, keep an eye on the artwork shown. How does Ottoman art seem to differ from other Islamic art?

1. Who was Osman and who were the Ottomans, originally?

2. Why did the Ottomans not expand south and east? Where did they go instead and why was it so easy for them?

3. How did the conquest of Bursa change the Ottomans forever? Why or how is this change so significant?

4. What became the makeup of the Ottoman army? (the practice is called devshirme)

5. What were the advantages of being a Janissary? What was unique about them?

6. Listen from 10:20 through 20:30 and take notes as you watch on what you think essential or interesting. At the end, look over your notes and summarize in 2-3 sentences what you learn about the Ottomans from the film’s discussion of Mehmet and the conquest of Constantinople.
