16.3 A Brief History of the Jewish People, Periods A-C
While the history of the Jewish people continues to evolve throughout our study of the Middle East, we will get an overview today of Jewish history from periods A-C. In many ways, the story of the Jewish people differs sharply from that of most of the cultures we have studied in the non-Western world. We will look again at the history of the Jewish people in period E later on. For today, make sure you understand how, after a brief great kingdom of period A, the Jewish people found themselves oppressed by outsiders near and far throughout most of their history.
Key Questions:
What were the consequences of the division of Israel into two different nations?
Why did so many conquerors treat the Jewish people so poorly?
How did life change for the Jewish people after they were removed from their homeland?
Homework:
Read the summary of Jewish history in periods A and B (and even into C!) on pages 12-16 in your reader.
As you read, make a table in google docs with these headings:
The United Monarchy
Divided Monarchy and Exile
Zealots at Masada (sidebar)
The Fall of Rome
Early Middle Ages
The Crusades
Persecution and Blood Libel
Under or beside each heading, write the most important ideas from each section of the readings.
