URL Shorteners

Google shortener (goo.gl) has become an extremely popular way to shorten really long web addresses. However if you've ever used it, you know that it frequently generates short web addresses that are just as difficult to type in as long web addresses. It's major advantage is that it is not blocked by Lightspeed as a security.shortener.

These are great options, but unfortunately they are blocked by Lightspeed as a security.shortener, tinyurl.com or tiny.cc. Like Google shortener, you paste in the long web address that you would like for your students to visit. But unlike Google shortener, you can generate how it gets shortened.

For example: Instead of having your kids search for or type in http://nextgen.apps.sparcc.org/home, you could have Google randomly shorten it to something like goo.gl/7tXqKt. OR, you could use tiny.cc to create something like tiny.cc/NGA. Tiny.cc also creates a QR code that can be scanned by any device with a QR scanner, like Red Laser.
