08. Cessnock Courthouse

Right next door is the Cessnock Courthouse, which has been a source of contention over the years. At the time, it was one of only two stone buildings in the region, and with Cessnock and vicinity only counting 69 men and 61 femals in total, travellers were often greatly surprised at the apparent extravagance of the government of the day in building such a luxurious Hall of Justice and often commented on the building.

Past the courthouse you will come to the corner of Wollombi Rd and Vincent Street. This corner marks one end of what was called “Main Street” and was the business hub of Cessnock at the turn of the century. Looking across, you will see a very important building in the history of the area.
