07. Cessnock Police Station

At the bottom of this hill, you will turn left onto Maitland Rd. A few steps more will take you to Cessnock Police Station. Originally established in 1881, it was a single building which did duty as a Courthouse, Police Station, Lockup and Clerk of Petty Sessions Office. It was a Seargent Ernest Henry Nowland that watched Cessnock Shire grow from a population of 100 odd people, to a town of between twelve and thirteen thousand. He took charge in 1903 and left Cessnock in 1914, just prior to the great war beginning. It was during his tenure that this building, which still houses the Police Station today, was occupied.
