28. John Campbell Memorial

Heading back along Wollombi Rd, you will see a small park area. Here is a memorial, which was commissioned by the City of Cessnock Historical Society to commemorate the death of John Campbell. This early settler, in 1826, was granted the title over the original land Cessnock was founded. He was the person who named the area Cessnock, after the castle in Ayrshire in Scotland which was his birthplace and family heritage. The land grant was for 2,560 acres originally and was first subdivided in 1853.
