陳康書匣 reading with Chung-Hwan Chen

Chung-Hwan Chen (Ludwig C. H. Chen, 1905-1992) is an excellent philosopher. His studies in ancient Greek philosophy is still incomparable among all Chinese-speaking scholars of the same field. During the WWII, he published "On the Parmenides of Plato"(Classical Quarterly (1944), 38 : pp 101-114) when he taught in National Central University, Chungking. The article was brought out from the country which was so seriously threaten by the flames of war. He also published papers in Phronesis when this significant journal of ancient philosophy has just issued its second volume (1957, 2:1 ; 2:2).

In the main library of Chinese Culture University, Taiwan, there are a number of scholarly books on Plato, Greek philosophy or ancient political thoughts printed around 50's~70's, donated by C. H. Chen and Carsun Chang.

(Carsun Chang is one of the most significant political thinkers in the changing China of the twentieth century. The current Constitution applied in Taiwan can be traced to the draft of "the Constitution of the Republic of China" which was written by Carsun Chang.)

[reminder: when you have the opportunity to meet these delicate books, please treat them with your highest tenderness.]

It is my great pleasure to find that some books on Plato which I am reading were read by C. H. Chen.

簽名Signature

Chung-Hwan Chen's signature.

Plato's Theory of Knowledge -- The Theaetetus and the Sophist of Plato。

Chen's signature on Plato's Theory of knowledge by Cornford.

Hackforth)。

In 1958, C. H. Chen went to Italy to participate a conference, and then went to U.S.A and finally accepted an offer of position and started to teach in Emory University. The signature below is on Hackforth's Plato's Phaedrus, the edition of the library of liberal arts with deep blue cover.

Post College of Long Island University任教,這本Plato's Epistles(柏拉圖書信集)應該是那個時期買的。

This copy of Plato's Epistles should be bought in the period when C. H. Chen taught in Post College of Long Island University. The receipt of purchase at Columbia university bookshop was kept between pages of the book.

Reading

My favorite is this book-- Burnet's edition of the Greek Text of Plato's Republic (in Platonis Opera IV, Oxford, 1903).

Chen must have use the book often and heavily. It looks broken now. The most fragile pages are about 508-521, the analogy of the Sun,the analogy of the Line, and the analogy of the Cave. It seems that the three analogies are so difficult to understand for Chen and thus he read these passages times out of number.

Politeia OCT

Here we can find Chen's handwriting. He wrote some notes very lightly in pencil on the right corner of the page 508: τὸ γιγνόμενόν τε καὶ ἀπολλύμενον 508d7 (the becoming and destroyed). In the context, Plato explains that in the region of the becoming and destroyed, the mind can only form δόξα (doxa, belief/ opinion/ judgement)。

Carsun Chang & the poetry booklet of Heidegger

I found some books on Greek philosophy are donated by Carsun Chang.

Inside the books of Carsun Chang, you may find his stamp. His name is so beautifully arranged inside the dark read square.

Chang's personality is so different from Chen. It could be shown by his handwriting. It leaps time to time as his thoughts, as waves of Yang-tzu River. Below he wrote: Pha(e)drus、form 在God之先、Idea 在(?)

Aus der Erfarhung des Denkens

Among the books of Carsun Chang, one big surprise would be a petite poetry booklet—

Aus der Erfahrung des Denkens by Martin Heidegger.

When Carsun Chang visited Germany in 1962, he received the poetry booklet from Heidegger. Inside of the cover, we find the handwriting of the philosopher Heidegger and his signature.

Inside the back cover, here is Chang's own stamp.

I heard that Da-dian ('dian' literally means books) building where the department of Philosophy is in Culture university, once upon a time, was the main library of the university. The building stand on the top of hill, seeing the sun sinks into Tamsui River day after day. The wind, the rain, the birds, the mountains and voices of students surround this building.

Books in the building. Words in the books. And much of many in and beyond the words.

End~
