196 - dinner at eight

February 17, 1989: "Falcon Crest" seemed to be running out of gas dangerously, partly due to the radical cast reduction and budget cut imposed by the new production company, Lorimar-Telepictures (previously, only Lorimar). Early in the season, a demented Melissa had been killed in a poorly staged fire of the Channing manor, and also Vickie, Eric and Frank (Rod Taylor) had been written out. Of these only Taylor was brought back, while Emma was scheduled to elope for good soon. Instead, the new producer Michael Filerman (who had been at that charge only by name until then) had decided to introduce a Latino family, the Ortegas, with Lance´s presumed old flame Pilar, her father César and her brother Tommy (Dan Ferro), who was going to tempt newly married Maggie. Also new were the surviving branch of Agrettis, Nick (David Beecroft) and his son Ben (Brandon Douglas). Although the show was down in the U.S. ratings, it was still popular in European countries like Spain. Probably it was not by chance that a Spanish actress, Assumpta Serna, appeared in 8 episodes of that season as Nick´s ex-wife. And no, Assumpta Serna didn´t speak with her voice in Spanish: she was dubbed by another actress.

Enero de 1991: "Falcon Crest" parecía perder gas peligrosamente, en parte debido a una radical reducción del reparto y del presupuesto impuesta por la nueva productora, Lorimar-Telepictures (antes conocida como Lorimar a secas). A principios de esa temporada, una enloquecida Melissa había muerto en el (pobremente rodado) incendio de la mansión Channing, y también habían desaparecido de la serie Vickie, Eric y Frank (Rod Taylor). De éstos, sólo volvería Taylor, mientras que pronto se prescindiría de Emma también, al fugarse con su novio. En su lugar, el nuevo productor Michael Filerman (que hasta entonces sólo lo había sido de nombre) había decidido introducir a una familia latina, los Ortega, con la presunta antigua novia de Lance, Pilar, su padre César y su hermano Tommy (Dan Ferro), que tentaría a la recién casada Maggie. También nuevos eran la rama superviviente de los Agretti, Nick (David Beecroft) y su hijo Ben (Brandon Douglas). Aunque la serie estaba de capa caída en USA, seguía siendo popular en países europeos como España. Seguramente no fue casualidad que una actriz española, Assumpta Serna, apareciese en 8 episodios de aquella temporada como la ex mujer de Nick, Anna Cellini. Y no, Assumpta Serna no se dobló a si misma aquí en castellano: su voz pertenecía a otra actriz (Laura Palacios).
