Thomas was born in Denver. He was an educator and psychologist. In addition to his most well-known book, he also with co-author James Long wrote "Killer: A Journal of Murder" about the life of serial killer Carl Panzram.
He died 10 Oct 1984 in a Portland, Oregon nursing home.
