"Jones went from Boston to the Sandwich Islands about 1820 or 1822 and became United States consul, and during his consulship made voyages between Boston and the Islands and other points. During his absence his duties were performed by a deputy, Stephen Reynolds, of Boston."

He was supercargo and owner in 1831 of the bark "Louisa", out of Boston, to trade at the Sandwich Islands (today Hawaii). He also at the same time, owned the ship "Volunteer". He is here called a "Boston merchant, engaged in trading to ports on the Pacific coast and the Islands."
