1 Charles Hutchins Hapgood

Charles Hapgood was born 17 May 1904 in New York City, the son of Hutchins Hapgood and his wife Neith Boyce. Both parents were journalists and writers. The family moved to Provincetown, Massachustts where they are living in 1924. He went to Harvard University, from where his got a Master's Degree. He was a college professor from 1945 to 1967. He was also an author, publishing his first book "Earth's Shifting Crust" in 1955. That book caused some scare when Mason Remey predicted a coming global catastrophe. In 1965, Charles Hapgood is named as a "Professor of history and anthropology at Keene State College". This same 1965 article states that Charles Hapgood espoused the theory that the ancient Phoenicians sailed to America. In 1966 he published a new book "Maps of the Ancient Sea Kings". He published a revised version of his first book in 1970 entitled "The Path of the Pole". In a 1971 article is is stated that he was writing a book on the trance medium Elwood Babbitt. Charles Hapgood died 21 Dec 1982 when he was struck by a car, having last resided at Greenfield, Franklin, Massachusetts.

2 Hutchins Harry Hapgood

Hutchins Hapgood was born 21 May 1869 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, the son of Charles Hutchins Hapgood and his wife Frances Louise "Fanny" Powers. He grew up in Alton, Madison County, Illinois where his father who a plow manufacturer, had moved the family in 1874.

He met Neith Boyce while they were both journalists working in New York City. They married 22 Jun 1899 and had four children, the eldest of which Harry Boyce Hapgood died in the 1918 Flu Pandemic. The second child Charles was an author most well-known for his book on earth cataclysms. The third child Miriam was an author of a book on Taos, New Mexico. (on Amazon) Miriam had been invited to Taos by Mabel Dodge Luhan, in order to address a several-year depression. Their fourth child was Beatrix.

Hutchins' elder brother Norman (b 1868) was a biographer, drama critic, and editor (in New York City), before becoming U.S Ambassador.to Denmark in 1919. Norman married Emilie Strong Bigelow who became a theater producer. Norman later assisted Alfred E Smith in his run for President, and his successful role as Governor of New York. Norman and Emilie's only child Ruth (1897-1963) married Sewell Tappan Tyng (b 1895) and died in a Mental hospital in Switzerland. Norman and Emilie divorced and he married secondly Elizabeth K Reynolds, they had three surviving children: Elizabeth, Norman Jr, and Ten Eyck.

Hutchins' younger brother William Powers Hapgood was the father of Powers Hapgood who co-organized the CIO labor union.

Hutchins' works included "The Spirit of the Ghetto", "The Autobiography of a Thief", "The Spirit of Labor", "The Anarchist Woman", "Types From City Streets" and "Paul Jones".

Hutchins died in his home in Provincetown, Barnstable County, Massachusetts on 26 Nov 1944. He is buried at Petersham, Worcester County, Massachusetts.

3 Neith Boyce

Neith Boyce was born 21 Mar 1872 in Franklin, Johnson County, Indiana, the daughter of Henry Harrison "H H" Boyce and his wife Mary Ella Smith. Around 1892 her father Henry took over the Arena Publishing Company of Boston (Source). One of the books they published was "a beautiful illustrated book of 'Songs' by Neith Boyce". In 1893 she contributed the story of the "Fra Diavola of El Dorado" to The Californian. In 1895 "The Portait of a Singer" to the November 'Short Stories' (Spurce).'The Beauties of "The Amazing Marriage" in the April Lotus in 1896. (Source) In 1898 she wrote about the Orlof Diamond. In 1903, her novel "The Forerunner" was published by Fox, Durfield & Co (Source) "the first long work from its author....a young American woman now living in Italy....she was at one time a reporter on the New York Commercial Advertiser and has been an editor of Vogue".

"Neith Boyce, author of 'The Eternal Spring,' just published by Fox-Duffield & Co, is the wife of Hutchins Hapgood, author of 'The Autobiography of a Thief' and some other unconventional literary work in books and magazines. She is also sister-in-law of Norman Hapgood, editor of Collier's Weekly, who has been of late very much in the lime light owing to the great Town Topics libel suit. In publishing her books, however, Mrs. Hapgood insists upon using her own maiden name as a sort of nom de plume, not wishing to shine with any reflected glory."

Hutchins and Neith helped organized the Provincetown Players.

Neith died 2 Dec 1951 at Provincetown, Barnstable County, Massachusetts. She is buried at Petersham, Worcester County, Massachusetts.
