She married first on 4 Aug 1765 to Christopher Horton of Catton, who died "four years later". (Source) On 2 Oct 1771 at Hertford Street, Mayfair, London, as "Mrs Anne Horton", she married as her second husband Henry Frederick (1745-90), Duke of Cumberland, the brother of King George III of England.Frederick knowing that his brother the King might bar the marriage, married Anne secretly, telling George a month later. King George considered the marriage a disgrace to the family as he writes in a letter to another brother William, Duke of Gloucester. But Gloucester himself, had recently contracted a secret marriage as well to Maria Walpole, Countess of Waldegrave. Because of George's strong disapproval of these matches, he had a law passed that no descendant of George II (his grandfather) could get married without the approval of the current monarch. This law has continued to this day.She was a flirt, she had beautiful eyes, her portrait was painted several times.Although George III, did not allow her to officially use the title Duchess of Cumberland, that is what everyone called her anyway. They had a great influence on the future George IV who preferred their house of parties and laughter to his father's more somber court. George IV himself would also contract a secret marriage in 1785 to Maria FitzHerbert.Frederick died without issue on 18 Sep 1790 at Cumberland House in Pall Mall, London. He had had some kind of lung problem, possibly cancer. Anne was granted an annual income of 4000 pounds which is today's money is over a half million U.S. dollars per year. Anne died 28 Dec 1808 at Gorizia near Trieste, Italy "aged 65" without issue.
