Levelset is not allowed to give legal advice, non-lawyers cannot give legal advice, we’re not a law firm, and we don’t represent our customers or others.
Lien law is complex, and usually relies on a lot of moving parts and factual information that we don’t know – this means even when a situation seems clear, WE MIGHT GET IT WRONG.
Giving legal advice opens us up to problems, specifically legal exposure. We can get in trouble for the Unauthorized Practice of Law (UPL) , which causes us problems, and costs us money, time, and business opportunities.
Legal advice is the application of law to a specific set of facts. It is different than legal information, which is general and not related to any particular person’s or entity’s specific situation.
You should file a lien, you are within your deadline, you should put this particular information on your lien claim.
Liens can provide strong protection against non-payment, the deadline for a subcontractor to file a lien on a non-residential Texas project is the 15th day of the 4th month after the debt accrued, a New York lien claim generally requires a claimant’s New York address, etc. General statements of fact, like our resources, are legal information, not legal advice.
