Computer Science

Course Description

What is Computer Science and why do our students need it?

Technology is everywhere! But do you truly understand how it works? Most people are consumers of technology everyday but they fail to understand the inner workings of the devices they operate. Additionally, in the near future, 70% or more of the jobs in Pennsylvania will require some sort of Computer Science skills or experiences. Despite this, many schools do not offer CS and many people don't know how vast and useful CS is!

This year in Computer Science students will build on their foundational knowledge and skills from 7th grade to continue to explore the process technology uses to get the tap of a finger on a screen to turn into the sounds of your favorite song. This year we will be working with the Code.org CS Discoveries curriculum which covers topics from Problem Solving and Computing to Data and Society.

These big ideas are the skill and content areas that make up Computer Science.

When we have Computer Science class, we will focus on these skills specifically to help your student become a 21st century learner.

Many students across PA do not get to experience CS, however, families like YOU want it! At YSCS, we have the unique opportunity to grow this program to support the immense need for people who can work in the CS field or other fields, such as fashion, agriculture, and medicine that are rapidly seeking people with CS skills and knowledge.

CS is not just another class or a great skill to put on a resume. By gaining CS skills and knowledge, our scholars are fighting for a more diverse, equitable, and accepting future for our society. Social justice and change can begin with something as simple as the click of a mouse.
