Project Purpose:
A. To understand how a line can be used to create a three-dimensional form
B. To create a sculpture that considers balance and repetition, variety and emphasis
C.To learn about sculpture artists and where they find their inspiration
Artists Studied: Ruth Asawa, Mark di Suvero, Mia Pearlman, Martin Puryear, Richard Serra, Sarah Sockbeson, Stephan White
Reflection: I was quite intimidated by such a long reed. I began making loops and intertwining the pieces and it all just came together. I then fastened every little loop and anywhere the reed came together and then I fastened the ends. After a long few days of waiting the reed was dry, and I was able to begin going and re-pinning them. Once the glue turned clear and finished drying I cut out paper Green and a sort of sherbet mix to fill in some of the loops. Finally, I took a piece of pink string and the piece was done. I hung it up and snapped some pictures and now it displays in a lovely well-lit hallway.
For my sculpture, I made sure to include lots of variety by making loops of all sizes and I added an extra bit of colored paper to provide even more variety as well as a good emphasis piece. By emphasis, I mean to draw attention to those pieces of paper lit in the window light.
I've learned the beauty of something that almost looks like a tangle. The beauty of the light passing through the piece when hung in the window. I have learned to work with a new material and how to make it my own. I have learned how to find that emphasis in your work that makes it unique. This whole project was a learning process but I was happy to be apart of it.
