Goals For this Semester:
During this semester, working with lighting and shadows is something I would like to get better at. I developed a concept for a project we could have called "Shadow Play." Similar to our usual photo assignments, we will take a number of photos with different subjects, but this time our subjects should be shadows making unique shapes. This will allow us to create simple photos that have a focus on something harder to manipulate. For this, we will need a lot of creativity and ability to use lights around us to make shadows of all different shapes.
This semester I want to focus on a certain style I've played with before, and that is making "vintage" or "nostalgic" photos. I love the way older photography has a certain look to it with sometimes dimmer and warmer colors or a grainy look to them, sometimes even black and white. The imperfections add to the pictures, and I would like to allow that and welcome it to my work this spring. To continue making progress towards this style, I've been playing with black and white photography and also allowing there to be imperfections like light glares and grain.
Outside of school, I want my photos to be seen. Going into a creative major in college, getting recognized is so crucial to developing your career. Most artists start off by getting big in one field and then taking off in the next. While a high school photographer may not be able to make it that big, I think getting my name out there is important. Whether it's a display at a local cafe or including prints in my clothing resell orders on Depop, starting locally will definitely be the way to go and progressively branching out.
A big weakness of mine is missing photo opportunities. Constantly around me there are things of interest to snap a picture of, yet so rarely do I take a photo of it without an assignment due. This semester I want to make it a priority to take photos constantly. To track this in my photo assignments, I want to make sure there are snippets of every important moment I had in the timeline I have to complete the work. Living in such a beautiful area gives me a unique opportunity to capture so many picturesque moments, and really taking advantage of that is what I hope to do.
