Prodject purpose:
To create four equally formed tiles
To demonstrate the effects of layering glaze colors
To develop glazing skills
To contribute to a test tile wall for current and future ceramics students
When it comes to wanting to make pieces showing craftsmanship and care with unanimous sizing perfecting really every aspect of a piece is crucial. This shows the organization and replication process the artist has to go through and the quality they can bring themselves to make. Of course, when making pieces unanimous is the intention this is the goal, but I also believe a huge part of an artist's work is to find a way to make it your own, and not all things have to be exactly the same uniqueness is good (of course not for a project like this). When it comes to my pieces I believe I was able to execute good craftsmanship and consistency within the even sizing, straight lines, smooth surfaces, and somewhat neat glaze jobs.
When I layered the glazes noticed the color I was assigned was much thicker and harder to work with than others in the studio so it allowed for other colors to layer on top well but did cause alot of spots in the glaze that were messy and not as smooth. The glaze color I used (Turquoise 0-26) is a vibrant and bold color so when it comes to layering colors on top pre-firing they were bright and had a noticeable difference from the initial color but after only those with a darker pigmentation ended up showing after firing.
I believe what was most beneficial to this project was getting to look back and use the tiles that people have made over the years when glazing because it allows you to see how certain colors layer and what color combos you may want to go for, but in my personal work while making tiles it really helped to learn patience when it comes to glazes drying before layering, and what to look for when applying glaze thickness what amount of layers you should use over designs, and of course when it comes to the clay portions making sure your pieces are equally sized.
