Purpose: Make a slab mug that demonstrates connecting slabs securely, creating and attaching a handle, and illustrates a personal narrative. This should be done through the handle, textures, added-on features and/or glazing.
Reflection:
This mug is my way to really bring back summer 2020, during this time I quarantined with my friend and that summer we decided to learn how to surf together. Throughout the summer we would always see this old-school green VW van with surfboards piled high on top of it and we decided when we were older we wanted to buy one together and live out our surfer dreams. The forever on the handle represents our forever friendship and no matter how much we've been through we find our way back to one another. In addition to the handle there's a hibiscus flower this represents of course when we surfed with lays on for her birthday but also is a symbol of luck and I gave her a hibiscus just before she moved away just for a little extra luck and positivity! When making the mug I sketched everything out first on the bare mug, then I began carving away making the textured background then adding on nobs to create the surfboards the sun, and the flower thumb rest. From there, I colored the majority of the piece with underglaze and then went over it with a clear overcoat.
If I could go back and fix anything I think I would've liked to take my time more and pace myself, I aimed to finish quickly for the class but I think if I could have taken it slowly and cleaned up areas like the sun or added more detail to the surfer ect. I also think it would've been cool to add more design to the handle like swirls to represent waves or a stem to the flower just to really make it pop more. Otherwise, I really do like this mug it's not perfect but it brings back so much happiness.
