Case Study FHES
CPD at FHES
At FHES we are one of twelve Steplab Coaching Hub schools in the country who are using Steplab in successful, novel and interesting ways to power instructional coaching and CPD for our staff.
We navigate the challenges of contextual adaptation, implementation and culture-building as part of our bespoke CPD that we offer.
Instructional Coaching at FHES
At FHES we recognise that ‘every teacher needs to improve, not because they are not good enough, but because they can be even better’ Dylan Williams. Therefore we invest in teachers' time to deliver a bespoke instructional coaching program on Steplab for our 1-5 year teachers, with the aim of this becoming a program for all.
The heart of this model is the action step, a specific, 'granular' change to a teacher's practice. This is influenced by the popularity of the Teach Like a Champion approach, where the 'moves' of teaching are front and centre in teacher development (Lemov, 2015)
This model is directive, meaning the coach decides the granular target and the teacher enacts.
The coach then uses a set of coaching moves (See It, Name It, Do It) to take the teacher through modelling, deliberate practice and implementation planning and help ensure they enact with fidelity.
The model is based on regular observation and feedback cycles between a coach and a teacher.
CPD Modules at FHES
At FHES we work through a series of CPD modules on Steplab throughout the academic year. All staff engage in research-informed reading, reflect upon their own classroom practice, film episodes of lessons to gain staff feedback and work collaboratively with their colleagues to improve classroom practice.
Each CPD Module is designed to fit around a busy teaching role.
Much of the work can be completed in short bursts around existing schedules.
Each CPD Module triangulates certain key aspects of FLOW learning, which align with CPD in SPDS.
Each CPD Module is underpinned by the EEF Guidance report and allows staff to Research, Plan, Implement and Review each topic.
