We hope that your student is looking forward to a successful and happy first year at Strode’s College or Windsor College and an enjoyable summer break.
As you will no doubt be aware, the transition from school to Sixth Form is an exciting time for our young learners but, it is also likely to present challenges. The expectations and demands of Level 3 study are high and the style of teaching and learning both inside and outside the classroom is very different to that experienced at school. The biggest difference is the amount of independent and self-directed study our students are expected to undertake.
Unlike school, where students are likely to be in the classroom for the full day, our learners have approximately 14.5 hours of contact time with their teachers and tutors. This means there are a similar amount of hours on their timetable showing no contact time.
However, it is vital that this non-contact time is used effectively. At Strode’s College and Windsor College we set the expectation that for every hour of teaching and learning undertaken inside the classroom, students should undertake the same amount outside of the classroom. We hope that you have witnessed, discussed and supported your son / daughter / ward with some of their learning outside of the classroom. Often referred to as ‘independent study’, the college has branded this important element of a student’s progress and success, ‘Study Plus+’.
This year, each learner will be given clear advice, information and guidance on how to maximise their Study Pus+ time, including the following:
A subject specific Study Plus+ guide
Study Plus+ guidance on each subject Google Site
In-class Study Plus+ work set (homework)
Areas around the college where each learner can undertake Study Plus+
Timetabled Study Plus+ periods visible on their timetable
In relation to student timetables, ‘Independent Study’, ‘Study Plus’ and ‘Study Plus (Supplementary)’ are all effectively the same - learning outside of the classroom. Although rooming may show on a student’s timetable, these sessions are not registered, not officially roomed and not staffed. They act as reminders and time management support which are designed to encourage learners to use their time wisely and point them towards rooms which can be used to complete Study Plus+. Work.
As young adults, we actively encourage independence and a self-motivated approach to learning. However, we also know that students benefit from encouragement and guidance from the college. We also know how powerful parental support can be in a student realising their full potential. With regards to Study Plus+, the college hopes that we can rely upon our parents / carers to promote the benefits of Study Plus+ and instil a positive independent learning attitude in our learners from the start of their tenure at Strode’s College Windsor College.
We look forward to supporting your student throughout their time at Strode’s College or Windsor College and hope that they are successful in the studies.
