Hello students and parents!
Welcome to 8th grade! I am very excited to be teaching the Math I course this year and am looking forward to getting to know each and every one of you this year. My contact information can be found at the end of this letter. I am looking forward to what I know will be a great year!
Attendance and Make-up work: Because each class period builds on previous knowledge, it is very important that you are in class. It is very difficult to succeed at your full potential if you are absent. When absences cannot be avoided, it is YOUR responsibility to attain class notes and complete the assignments you missed. Always be sure to check the missed work folder for your class and day, and then it is up to you to get the notes you missed (whether it be online or from a classmate). If you know you are going to be absent, please let me know in advance, and obtain any assignments ahead of time. An absence does not relieve the student from the responsibility of meeting deadlines. All make-up work must be completed within one week of the day missed.
Extra Help: If you do not understand a concept you are encouraged to get extra help immediately. I am available during smart lunch and after school if given prior notice.
Conduct: You are expected to be prepared each day for class with your homework, notebook, pencil, paper and calculator. You must be seated and ready to begin class when the bell rings. Remember: no electronic devices, no headphones, no food/drinks (except for water bottle), and no hats permitted. These items distract from our learning environment. All Wake County Schools and Carroll Middle School policies and procedures will be enforced.
Suggested Supplies: The following items are recommended for this class:
· 3 ring binder
· Lined notebook paper (preferably loose-leaf)
· Graph paper
· Pencils (because they have erasers for when mistakes happen J, no pens please)
· Graphing calculator TI-84 (is preferred, if you already have a TI-83 that is fine for this class)
*Colored pencils and highlighters are optional.
Course Outline:
· Unit 1: Sequences
· Unit 2: Linear and Exponential Functions
· Unit 3: Features of Functions
· Unit 4: Equations and Inequalities
· Unit 5: Systems of Equations and Inequalities
· Unit 6: Quadratic Functions
· Unit 7: Connecting Algebra and Geometry
· Unit 8: Modeling Data
WCPSS has adopted the MVP (Mathematics Vision Project) instructional materials for Math 1. Students will receive a workbook for each unit (also called modules), and homework will be assigned nightly. Support materials and videos are available through the student’s WakeID and Canvas. To view as a parent, you will need to use your student’s login.
Grading: Because this course is part of the high school curriculum, Math 1 will be operating on a ten-point grading scale as shown below, as well as a total point grading system, rather than having grades based on a competency. The breakdown is 25% classwork, homework and formative assessments (quizzes, exit tickets, etc.) and 75% summative assessments (50/50 tests and performance assessments).
HONOR CODE: Cheating of any kind will not be tolerated.
Contact Information: Parents and students with a concern may contact me by e-mail. My school email address is: rmuthusubramanian@wcpss.net
