Early on an autumnal Sunday morning, 6th Rugby Scouts & Tripontium Explorers supported by Leaders and parents were roadside on the route of the Rugby HM. Setting up the water stations ready to support the circa 1000 runners setting off at 09:00.
With the route looping twice into the countryside, each station is visited twice. The first station in particular is very busy, with the runners visiting it first after just over one mile. It was a bit manic. Second time around, things were much more relaxed with the runners more spread out. There was a greater opportunity to offer support to the runners, many in return shouting out their thanks.
And of course once the last runner has passed the second time round it was time to make sure all the discarded bottled and gel wrappers etc were collected (I'm sure we collected more rubbish than was created on the day, Rat braving the roadside ditches). We were also responsible for dismantling the water stations and packing everything up ready for the race organisers to collect.
Fortunately the rain held off for us. So all setup, just waiting for the runners.
It wasn't all hard work. Our two Scouts found time to sit and relax whilst the runners were out on the course.
Water Station 2, further out on the course was a bit more upmarket. They had gels to handout as well as water, and even toilets!
Picking up half empty water bottles was one thing. Picking up sticky gel wrappers something else. And then Rat volunteered to tidy up the ditches.
So, big thanks to our Young People: Alice, Matilda, Elliot, Ethan, Jasper, Jonny, and Tom. Our parent \ carers: Danielle, Rachel, Vicky, Tim, and Tom. Our adult Leaders: Fruitbat AKA Ruth, David, and Toad AKA Sean. Raising money for next year's European Adventure.
