Church Parades were a regular feature of 6th Rugby Group activities before COVID disrupted Scouting and so much more. In fact one of the first casualties of COVID for us was our planned Mothers' Day Church Parade. Before the actual lockdown we decided it was best to cancel.
And for a variety of reasons, although we've been back to Scouting as normal in so many ways, we hadn't had a Church Parade. Until this year, and Remembrance Sunday. So Sunday 12 November 2023 was our first Church Parade in four years, and therefore for all of our Beaver Scouts and the majority of our Cub Scouts, their first ever Church Parade.
All 6th Rugby Scouts attending their first Remembrance Day Church Parade are awarded a white necker that can be worn each year during the month of November, so there were plenty of new white neckers handed out. We needed a mini production line to roll them all. It was great to see so many of our young people attend, and so many families also stay for the service. A number of the congregation commented on the great behaviour of the young people to the leaders, and how good it was to see the uniformed groups back. It's worth highlighting and remembering that one of the reasons our subs are so low is the support given by Rugby URC to uniformed organisations like 6th Rugby Scout Group.
So well done all. And as future motivation, attendance at a second Remembrance Sunday Church Parade earns a poppy woggle to go with the necker, and attendance at a third Church Parade earns a F.U.R.Y. badge.
