A Friday evening in March and 5 Leaders, 2 Young Leaders, 8 Scouts, and 8 Cubs met at Rugby Station for a trip to Coventry Scout Gang Show at the Belgrade Theatre. A bit of a downer when we turned up and learned that the train that we planned to catch had been cancelled, but amazingly, everyone was on time and we were able to get an earlier train than planned and we arrived at Belgrade Theatre in plenty of time.
Gang Shows are theatrical performance by members of Scouts and Guides. Shows normally have members of all ages involved. And in addition to the on-stage performers, there's a large amount of other areas that will also have Scouts and Guides of all ages, including backstage, technical, administration, management and other areas.
Gang Shows are entirely volunteer run, and often feature a majority of work written by Scouting and Guiding members. This can be new work, or may be existing works adapted to suit the show's intended narrative. With one very traditional song being "We're Riding Along on the Crest of a Wave".
The Group had great fun, and the hard work of the volunteers over the previous six months shone through.
And when the show finished, we had a still energised Group manage the walk back to Coventry Station for our train to Rugby.
A Gang Show visit is likely to become a regular feature of our programme, we've already discussed ideas on how we can improve the experience.
If your young person would like to become involved in a gang show, look out for the auditions for our own Warwickshire Gang Show. We includ details of auditions on our website.
