An at times wet weekend in September saw 7 Beavers (all on their first Night Away), 13 Cubs (6 on their first Night Away), 12 Scouts, 4 Young Leaders, and 5 Leaders gather at Rugby District's Coton Scout Camp for 6th Rugby's first group camp in several years.
Activities began Friday night. With the first activity for arriving Cubs and Scouts being to pitch their tents, and once pitched set up their sleeping bags, mats, etc. I think it's fair to say that some tents were pitched quicker than others.
Fortunately all were pitched before it was too dark, and the evening finished with hot-dogs before lights out.
The Cubs settled well. But it was a false dawn! Toad had to get up at 02:30 to tell one tent to pipe down, and then again at 05:30 to tell a couple of tents to pipe down. But not too bad. We've known worse.
Saturday morning was bright and crisp. And whilst the Young People tidied up tents chaos ready for inspection, Leader got on with the important tasks of making cups of tea, and preparing a cooked breakfast bap for all. Abbey cooking an awful lot of hash browns, bacon, and eggs.
While the Cubs were having their breakfast cooked for them, the Scouts were cooking there own breakfast on an open fire. Much more challenging! Still managed to fry their bacon though!
We're incredibly fortunate to have a site like Coton on our doorstep. A complete escape from the routine, surrounded by trees, and occasionally visited by wildlife.
Although with the Beavers arriving Saturday morning and the noise level ratcheting up, the wildlife wisely kept away. Although we did hear the occasional screech of an owl, and a kite flew incredibly low over the camp.
Sadly our wildlife cameras didn't catch anything this time.
After breakfast and arrival of the Beavers, it was time for activities. Regardless of what the weather threw at us. As well as pioneering, we also had axe throwing and den building. The den building the Beavers and Cubs had super support from two of our older Scouts. Matilda and Jonny.
Saturday Dinner, and the Beavers and Cubs had Abbey and Oak to thank for customisable spag bol. Meanwhile the Scouts were again cooking for themselves on the open fire supervised by Shere Khan. Chicken fajitas for them.
Whilst half the leadership team coped with the washing up. A lot of washing up. Fruitbat led the Group in a traditional campfire. There were songs, and sketches, and even a Shakespeare recital.
A significantly more tired set of Scouts, Cubs, and Beavers settled down for the night, giving the leadership team chance to chill round the campfire with a fine selection of cheese and biscuits. A long held tradition now for 6th Rugby.
Was an awful lot quieter than Saturday! Not a surprise.
Key was all packing kit up and emptying tents so we could do our best to dry them before packing. Which is when the "lost" items from last night "miraculously" reappeared.
After breakfast, the Beavers and Cubs were able to fit in activities and games whilst Scouts helped with breaking camp.
Beavers and Cubs worked together on a blindfold trail. The blindfolded following a rope through the woods. Climbing under and over logs, navigating their way around obstacles, and avoiding brambles. In most cases.
Eventually, with everything, bar the main mess tent, packed. It was time for a reflection on the Group Camp led by our Young Leaders.
Eventually it's time to go home. Fortunately given the weather later in the afternoon, we'd already planned on a prompt finish.
We finished with a thanks led by David, and then a reflection led by our Young Leaders. And a group photo to replace the one taken over three years ago at Get In 2022.
