Colony Meetings

Each week during term time our Beaver Colony meets.

Completing awards challenging them to do more, learn more and be more. Getting better at activities they already enjoy, or trying something completely new.

Or sometimes simply having a great time playing games with friends.

Badges@Home: Dobbie

Some of our badge work can be completed at home. As part of his Creative badge, Oliver built this Lego Dobbie.

Air Activities

Our Beavers have been working towards their Air Activities Stage 1 badge, and as part of the badge they were given the opportunity to design their own plane, or their own plane interior, with our Young Leaders voting for their favourite. The winner was Willum's design, winning because of it's more than passin resemblance to a dragon!

Digital Maker

This week we finished our Digital Maker badge. Learning about what makes up a computer, and how common they are, that they are in fact all around us every day. We also learnt about some of the history of computing, including how much they used to cost. For our final activity, with Pac Man sights and sounds for inspiration the Beavers designed their own sprite. And here's Boden's.

Games Night #1

Something new this week as our senior Beavers brought in games from home to lead with the younger Beavers. The games proved so enticing the Young Leaders couldn't resist joining in, and the evening was so successful we'll be repeating.

Badges@Home: Lego

As part of his Creative Activity badge, Chester sent us a wonderful timelapse video of his Lego build.

Bread Experiment

This week we completed our bread experiment. A couple of weeks ago we opened a packaged loaf of bread. Some slices were only handled by Beavers with cleaned hands before being put into bags. Others were handled by Beavers with dirty hands. The difference was clear, and highlighted to the Beavers the importance of cleaning hands before food prep!

The Power of Positive Thinking

It's never too soon to start spreading the message about the importance of good mental health. So whilst we may not have used that phrase with our Beavers, we did complete a simple experiment demonstrating the power of positive affirmations before finishing with a period of reflection.

We Can Be Heroes

At last night's Beaver Colony meeting, our final activity was a simple one. Draw your own superhero, give them a name, and pick three superpowers that they have. We started with a brief check that we knew what a superhero was, and we got plenty of examples. Most of which I recognised. Superman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, etc. The Beaver Scouts were then given about 15 minutes to do their own design, with the guidance that the quality of the picture wasn't of major importance, we wanted to learn more about the names and the powers, and the whys behind them. And as a bit of an incentive, our Young Leader Rat was going to judge the winner.

We had some good entries. One design was an improvement on The Flash, and one of our football mad Beaver Scouts designed a superhero to help their beloved Coventry City, with the super powers of super speed, always on target shots, and teleportation to get round defenders. But the winner, that we all agreed on, was Inaya.

Inaya bent the rules slightly. She didn't have to invent a superhero, because she already has one. Her dad.

Inaya's superhero pic is below, and if you're struggling with reading a seven year old's speedy handwriting when they are running out of time and at the end of a long day it says. "My dad...he is a doctor...he helps look after people".

Visit to Rugby Quaker Meeting House

Out and about again, the Beaver Colony visited the Rugby Quaker Meeting House as part of our Faith Activity Badge. The Quaker movement began almost 400 years ago, and there has been a Meeting House in Rugby for over 100 years now.

We learnt about their five key values of Truth, Equality, Simplicity, Peace, and the most recently added of Sustainability. The Quakers were the first religion to campaign for the end of slavery.

In the photo you can see the Beavers drawing pictures that relate to those five key values.

Leicestershire Search & Rescue Visit

Another great meeting at Coton with a visit from Stu of Leicestershire Search & Rescue. Stu told the Beavers about the work he does as a search & rescue volunteer, and showed them some of the kit that they use before giving them the opportunity to try some of the kit. Including stretchering an Explorer "casuality".
