Week 5
Week 5
Am I doing my best? Am I showing mana all the time? Am I trying my hardest? What are my goals for this year?
Listening to the lessons the teacher is giving
Make sure I focus when doing my work
Trying hard and again and again (like a piharau!) and not giving up
Check my work carefully as I go to make sure it is correct and tidy
Watching what I say and do in the classroom and the playground - and - outside of school too
Asking for help when I need it, making a positive move to get help rather than sitting around waiting for it
Moving away from someone who is stopping me doing my work
Helping others
Showing mana all the time
I will be proud of myself and the effort I put in
I will make progress in my work
People will think I'm a good person and want to be my friend
Our future will be brighter every single day
We will get rewards both as individuals and as a class
Is our problem a big one? Or a small one? Do we need a teacher to help or are we old enough to sort out yourselves?
Are we trying to get someone else growled at, or are we trying to stop something that might get someone hurt? It's important to know, now you are old enough, what to do in what situation.

Value - In a number, a digit's value is the digit's worth in that number. The worth of 6 in 623 is 600. The number value applies even when there is more than one of the same digit in a number. For instance, in 5,453, the value of the first 5 is 5,000 and the second 5 is 50.
Strategy - a plan, a method or a way to solve a problem or reach an answer
Column - where you write number one on top of the other in a line. A column is up and down, not side to side.
Row - where you work from left to right or right to left, across the page not up and down.
If you have done ALL your mahi, then you can do these activities (not when doing "can do" sessions).
TIMES TABLES GAMES ONLINE - complete all the activities (before you practice using the games). Get your certificate for ALL of the times tables. Practice until you can do it with your eyes closed! NO GAMES UNTIL YOU HAVE DONE ALL THE ACTIVITIES FOR ONE OF THE TIMES TABLES.
PROTOTEC - Start at a lower level to get your brains going, then go up to the next level to push yourself. Try to get at least 90% correct, keep on trying!
PRACTICE CHAMPS CARDS - Do one card for the day. Don't do the same card twice. Note: The QR codes do NOT work on these.
MATHS BUDDY - When you have finished your ACTIVE TASKS (must be done first) then try the Weekly Revision.
POLYMATH - Play by yourself! Choose home if the option comes up.
We are learning about inferences.
We make inferences when we use:
What we already know
The clues in the text
To come up with what the author or speaker means.
Make a copy of all THREE of these slides
Save them to your READING folder
We will work through them as a class together.
Whaene Vicki will call you up in small groups also for reading.

PRACTICE EVERY DAY.
When you earn enough honeypots, you can change your Avatar on FRIDAYS ONLY, not during the week.
The purpose of a Sizzling Start is to engage the reader and make them want to read more! Don't begin at the start of the day/holiday/weekend, when nothing is happening:
One day …
It was the start of the holidays …
On the weekend …
Start where the action is or at a moment of change when things get far more interesting, then backfill the who, what, where and why as the action unfolds.
Exemplars
1. Start with action
Five, four, three, two, ONE! The cameras were rolling and I was about to eat a cockroach.
2. Start at a moment of change
All was going well on the hike until the heat wave happened. I was hot and sweaty and dying for a swim. Then I saw the river. And the sign: Warning! Crocodiles.
3. Use humour
My goldfish, Jaws, loves his fishbowl. Only problem is – so does my cat,Kazoo!
4. Start with a sound
‘Buzzzzzz!’ The sound of my alarm clock echoed in my ears as I struggled to wake up. I sat straight up in my bed! This was my BIG day and I had to be on time.
5. Start with dialogue
‘It’s just a rat,’ I said, breathing hard.
‘Rats don’t growl,’ said Mike.
6. Ask a question
Ever wonder what happens when an elephant tries to blow out birthday candles?
7. Paint a word picture
The moon’s golden reflection shimmered across the glassy bay.
