PLTW Principles Biomedical Science Honors (S631)

(Abbr. Transcript Title: PLTW PBS H)

Grade Level: 9 - 12

Prerequisite: Successful completion of or concurrent enrollment in Lab Biology 1 or Lab Biology 1 Honors

Meets the UC/CSU "D" requirement/ Biology/Life Science

Course 1 in the BioMed sequence.

PBS will help prepare students for a career in medicine or health care and will challenge them to solve real-world problems. PBS students will practice how to think creatively and critically to innovate in science and gain practical experience tackling challenges that biomedical professionals face in the field. They will work through real-world situations, cases, and problems, such as solving a medical mystery case, diagnosing and treating a patient, and responding to a medical outbreak. PBS is designed to provide an overview of all the courses in the PLTW Biomedical Sciences Program and to lay the foundation necessary for student success in the subsequent courses in the pathway. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

PLTW Human Body Systems Honors (S271)

(Abbr. Transcript Title: PLTW HBS H)

Grade Level: 10 - 12

Prerequisite : Successful completion of PLTW PBS H and s uccessful completion of or concurrent enrollment in Chemistry 1 or Chemistry 1 Honors

Meets the UC/CSU "D" requirement/Biology/Life Science

Course 2 in the BioMed sequence

** Articulated through MiraCosta for the 2020-2021 for NURS 151 Body Systems Survey for Health Professions for students earning a B or higher in class with the final exam

Are you ready to learn more about the human body through the 2nd course in the PLTW Biomedical Science pathway? Examine the processes, structures and interactions of the human body systems. Explore how they work together to maintain homeostasis and good health. Work through real-world cases and play the role of biomedical professionals to solve medical mysteries.

PLTW Medical Interventions Honors (S551)

(Abbr. Transcript Title: PLTW Med Int H)

Grade Level: 10 - 12

Prerequisite: Successful completion of PLTW HBS H

Meets the UC/CSU "D" requirement/Biology/Life Science

Course 3 in the BioMed sequence.

** Articulated through Miramar College for Bio 131

Students investigate the variety of interventions involved in the prevention, diagnosis Medical Interventions is articulated with Miramar College Biology 131- Introduction to Biotechnology. Students can earn 4 college units that transfer to CSU/UC for free. To earn the college credit students must receive an A or B in the course and an A or B on the college level exam.and treatment of disease as they follow the lives of a fictitious family. The course is a "How-To" manual for maintaining overall health and homeostasis in the body as students explore: how to prevent and fight infection; how to screen and evaluate the code in human DNA; how to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer; and how to prevail when the organs of the body begin to fail. Through these scenarios, students are exposed to the wide range of interventions related to immunology, surgery, genetics, pharmacology, medical devices, and diagnostics.

PLTW Biomedical Innovation Honors (S636)

(Abbr. Transcript Title: PLTW BI H)

Grade Level: 11 - 12

Prerequisite: Successful completion of PLTW Med Int H

Meets the UC/CSU "D" requirement/Biology/Life Science

Course 4 in the BioMed sequence. In this course students solve problems related to the biomedical sciences. Students will design innovative solutions for the health challenges of the 21st century. Problems include designing more effective emergency room or as forensic pathologists students will examine a fetal pig using the same protocol as a human autopsy. They may consult with a mentor or advisor from a university, hospital, physician's office, or industry as they complete their work. Students are expected to present the results of their work to an adult audience, which may include representatives from the local healthcare or business community or the school's PLTW® partnership team.

What will I learn in DE class?

Digital Electronics (DE) is the study of electronic circuits that are used to process and control digital signals as opposed to analog signals that are varying. Digital electronics is the foundation of all modern electronic devices such as cellular phones, MP3 players, laptop computers, digital cameras, high definition televisions, etc.

What will I do in DE Class?

  • Solder

  • Work effectively in a team.

  • Build various circuits based upon a desired outcome;

  • Learn how to use Boolean Algebra to simplify circuits;

  • Learn how to create circuit simulations using Multisim software;

  • Learn how to use binary, octal, and hexadecimal numbering systems;

  • Learn electronic components;
