  • Hana Dragon Fruit variety comes from the genus Hylocereus and from the species monacanthus. This variety was collected on the road to Hana on the island of Maui, Hawaii. The stems of this variety differ from other Hylocereus being thinner with long thorns. This variety is also a super fast grower, growing over 6 feet per year. From cutting to fruit took 14 months, making it the fastest variety to fruit at Spicy Exotics in under 2 years.

Flowers from this variety are unique with a typical white fading to a soft pink base. See our pictures on this page for a detailed view. When blooming during nighttime a sweet fragrance fills the air. The fruit is small weighing about a pound. An unexpected surprise was the taste of the fruit. It is similar to a sweet melon with a floral or rosy aftertaste. The average Brix rating of the fruit is 17.5.

These three characteristics (stem, flower, and fruit taste) make this variety stand out from other Hylocereus undatus. This variety is self-fertile and a great source of pollen for pollinating other varieties. We collected this variety from a grower in Hawaii. (Credit to Spicy Exotics)
