Research Question
How might we create a visually appealing design that captures a sustainable but speculative future based on Solar punk, that immerses our audience into a whole new world.
Project Overview
My primary motivation was to create a future where we solved the climate crisis, created a world where tech and nature were merged and living in harmony. To show that the world isn’t going to be taken over by robots or burn and die off, but instead create an optimistic and positive outlook that we can create a better future for ourselves through sustainability and caring for our planet. However, as I got into it, I expanded and wanted to create the world with history, story and realism through my art and illustration. I wanted to balance both narratives, and wanted to make a perfect future that can be ruined through humanity’s greed as a plot twist.
Illustration / Book Design / Storytelling
People who are interested in world building, speculative future, illustrations and even people who love sustainability and what it might look like in the future.
I researched different material based on Solar-punk via the internet, the history of the world, previous articles and books based on the same idea of a sustainable future.
I figure out what would be best to start my world off and started thinking and writing the stories on paper.
Designed the characters written before and how I imaged them to look like, create their worlds along the way.
Putting it all together in a book format on InDesign.
Talked to a music producer, to create possible music to make my world feel more alive and real.
I designed the following components as part of my solution:
Inform the audience about the history of my world through small easter eggs as well as explain what my project is based in. I want the audience to understand that my design is a subgenre of it, and how my book will explore similar ideas to an ecological friendly future in my style.
Make the audience feel inspired about a whole new world of Solar-Punk and be invested in the characters I am showing. They would want to understand why the ending happened the way it did and what the deeper meaning of all it was.
After my design process, for my solution to be a success, I know it needs to:
Design an aesthetic layout to easily help users follow along with the stories and make their reading experience more enjoyable.
Involve a common trend to all my stories. This would be the butterfly.
Make the style and art cohesive as well as the text to make my work look more unified, make common elements.
Keep audiences wondering and wanting more of the world.
Immerse users in some other way beside visual design, work together with Dan and make a song to help immerse audiences more.
When creating an aesthetic layout, I wanted to make use of the space I had with a combination of what I’ve learned in VCD over the years from Type and Image.
In my stories specifically, I created a common theme and narrative with each story ending in a slightly somber tone. Something that’ll leave the audience guessing a bit. Another common trend is the butterflies being mentioned everywhere, from a hair pin to a rare species in Vietnam.
When deciding my style and “branding” of the book, I wanted to make sure everything is the same weight, opacity, color, etc. I did this by noting them my text’s fonts, sizes, and even paragraph spacing. I also created a color palette that I used throughout the book. Every brush I used is in a Capstone Folder on my iPad. Even the weight of the brush is marked down to make sure everything looks intentional. Lastly the aesthetics I used was kind of a coloring, children’s story book of sorts. I wanted to mess around with brushes with a colored pencil texture and watercolor to make it look almost hand drawn.
As explained a little before, I give the audience bits and pieces of information. Almost like handing out puzzle pieces so they can fill in the spaces and get a better picture! I did this in my stories, not completely explaining the ending, and giving some hints here and there in my character designs on what kind of global crisis everybody is going to face.
I tried to immerse the audience into my design book besides the visuals by working together with a friend overseas to create a music piece for my storybook. Almost like in a WEBTOON, where they have music in some chapters of their stories! It inspired me to reach out to my friend, Dan, to help me create something for my story.
