Research Question
How might we provide resources for transracial adoptees who want to heal from the traumatic effects of adoption?
Project Overview
I am a transracial adoptee and I have always felt ashamed to admit that. Growing up I’ve learned from people at school, and even in media, that being adopted is second to being biologically related to your parents. Due to this stigma, I would ignore the fact that I was different from my family, and this caused me to be someone who I’m not. By creating this space for transracial adoptees, it will allow others like me to heal and create community.
Web Design / UI/UX / Social Media
My audience is transracial adoptees who want to understand their feelings about their adoption and want to build a community. My ideal users are young adults who want to become more comfortable with their adoption. They are looking to becoming more confident in who they are to find a sense of identity.
I researched racial identity development and why it is important to understand the concept of race
I researched the traumatizing effects that can happen with transracial adoption
I interviewed and gathered data about transracial adoptees and their personal experiences with their adoption
I developed multiple iterations of a journey map documenting the experience of a transracial adoptee
I researched how nonprofit organizations, specifically trauma-centered (ex: the Julian Center), design their websites to provide resources to victims of trauma. This was to help me understand the information hierarchy.
I designed the following components as part of my solution:
Website Pages
About
Resources
Workshops
Services
Connect
Experience Map for Transracial Adoptee
Informative Brochure
Instagram Page
After my design process, for my solution to be a success, I know it needs to:
Provide transracial adoptees with resources to learn more about themselves surrounding their adoption.
Create a safe space where transracial adoptees can feel comfortable opening up.
Leave users feeling inspired and wanting to learn more about themselves.
Allow users to build their own adoptee community.
Have symbolism of growth and healing in the branding.
Multiple education resources are provided on the website to help adoptees understand their feelings surrounding their adoption.
It’s common for adoptees to be apprehensive when talking about their adoption. Users can share their own experiences on Instagram or the flourish website.
Reading Instagram stories and education resources on the website can help validate adoptees feelings and help them learn that they’re not alone. This sense of unity can leave users feeling inspired.
The Connect webpage and the Instagram page allow users to host and attend gatherings and keep in touch with each other.
The symbolism of growth and healing relates to the personal growth and emotional healing adoptees will experience while using flourish. Growth and healing are symbolized by the various flower elements and using the colors purple and green.
