Research Question
How might we create a magazine that sheds light on the climate crisis and inspires others to take action to better the environment?
Project Overview
The environmental crisis has been a major concern, and continually needs to be addressed. Earthly is a brand that strives to raise awareness among the population about the damage being done to the environment. We call out industries, companies, and people that are causing harm to our Earth, as well highlighting who is doing right. By using a magazine as the main form of communication, we’re able to share this awareness about the environment and inspire others to take action and practice sustainability in their daily lives.
Branding / Magazine Design / Climate Design
My audience is young adults and older who have an idea of the climate crisis, but want to learn more about it. They have an interest in sustainability, but aren’t sure where to start. They want to make a change and better themselves to better the world.
I started with some basic research on the state of the environment, as well as the fashion industry’s impact on the environment
I researched what sustainability means and how it has evolved in the fashion industry the past few decades to get to the point we are now
I explored existing sustainable and environmental magazines and brands to get a feel of what the market already has
I explored a variety of color palettes, brand names, and styles to define the mood/tone of my brand
I went through multiple drafts of each spread of the magazine to create a cohesive style and layout
I designed the following components as part of my solution:
Earthly Magazine: Issue 01 The Fashion Industry
Branding
Social media posts (Instagram)
Website
Flyers
After my design process, for my solution to be a success, I know it needs to:
Utilize an aesthetic that is intriguing for the viewer & stands out from typical style and colors often associated with sustainability.
Inform the audience of the effects of the fashion industry & the need for change.
Help the audience incorporate more sustainable practices in their daily lives.
Use history, facts, and imagery to inspire the audience to take action. Better themselves to better the environment.
Present the information through a printed magazine that becomes a keepsake.
I wanted my brand to be fresh approach on sustainability. I used a color palette that reflects a typical “eco” colors, but is more vibrant and energetic. I also played with interesting typefaces and image quality that is unique to my brand.
The introduction of the magazine goes through facts of what harm the fashion industry is doing to the planet. The magazine goes on to address the effects of fast fashion and trends in further detail. Social media posts are also used to convey this information in an efficient way.
A section of the magazine is focused on inspiring the audience to incorporate sustainable shopping practice in their habits. This includes thrift tips, sustainable brands to shop from, as well as a guide of questions to ask when making a purchase.
By going through a history of the evolution of sustainability in the fashion industry, the audience is able to understand how we got to the point we are at now. The need for change is more easily understood. The tone of the brand/magazine was also created to be motivating to the user.
The magazine was designed to be visually intriguing with valuable information. It is made with quality and can be easily kept on a coffee table or bookshelf to be shared with others.
