Research Question
How might we encourage people to integrate recycling into their daily routines through an incentive-driven recycling service to develop a more environmentally conscious society?
Project Overview
I am very passionate about recycling and inspiring people to make eco-conscious choices. It can be confusing, expensive and inconvenient to find places to recycle, especially for hard to recycle items, but a door-to-door recycling service would solve the stress and anxiety that comes along with recycling. By designing an app, a door bin, and bags to sort out recyclable goods, we can inspire others to follow a more eco-conscious lifestyle.
Branding / UI/UX / Service Design
My audience is centered younger adults who feel that they don’t know enough about recycling. I want my service to be convenient, educational, and motivational to inspire young adults to add recycling into their weekly routines, without feeling like it’s a costly burden.
I researched recycling, specifically in Indiana, to get a better idea on what needs to improve about the system.
I investigated what kind of recycling services are offered and how they can be improved and made to be more accessible.
Collected research in Denmark to compare recycling systems and pinpoint the pain points in Indiana’s recycling habits.
I developed several rounds of branding and product prototypes that I evaluated with peers.
I designed the following components as part of my solution:
Recycling bin prototype
Bags to organize items by category.
Mobile App (set up process)
Brand booklet
Journey map
After my design process, for my solution to be a success, I know it needs to:
Inform the audience about hard to recycle items and how their actions impact the environment.
Utilize bright and trendy design to draw in a new, younger audience to get them excited about recycling.
Create a simple yet appealing user experience for the audience to interact with.
Value sustainability in the deliverables.
Inspire the audience to recycle and be more conscious about their environmental impact.
ReBin informs its audience to recycle and increase their environmental awareness through educational resources and a mobile app to monitor customers environmental impact.
ReBin’s branding incorporates vibrant colors, playful patterns and illustrations, and a unique typeface to ensure that the brand and its deliverables stand out.
To ensure a good user experience, the mobile app achieved this through intuitive navigation, clean interface design, and minimalist visuals that prioritize usability and aesthetics.
By incorporating recyclable materials and reusable organizational bags, the deliverables align with the company’s commitment to bettering the environment.
ReBin inspires and motivates its audience to recycle by allowing users to track their recycling progress by earning points for each item they have recycled. These points can be exchanged for gift cards from a variety of companies to reinforce positive environmental behaviors.
