Research Question
When might the Oscar for Best Animated Feature have gone to the wrong film?
Project Overview
I have found that the Academy Awards has an odd history with the category of Best Animated Feature, as it seems to be something of a tossup as to which film will win the award in some cases. My task was to view all the nominated films, make assertions as to when the award should have gone to a different film, and design a series of deliverables that explain these choices and celebrate the chosen films’ newfound honorary award status.
Illustration / Web Design / Infographics
My audience is not specific to a certain social demographic, but rather people who are also passionate about movies. They will have the greatest appreciation for the range of the project and the specifics of the research. They will also be most likely to be familiar with all the films discussed here
I watched all 99 films nominated for Best Animated Feature, just to be sure of my selections rather than having a bias towards or against certain films.
I found that I disagreed with the winner for 9 of the 23 years of the award. From this, I selected the film which I believed was more deserving of the award (not always the film I liked best).
I researched 18 films (9 winners, 9 that I thought should have won), one by one to see what the production process was like for each of them, as well as their budgets, review scores, other
nominations, and their impact on culture and the animation industry.
After backing up my claims with research, I developed my deliverables.
I designed the following components as part of my solution:
A series of infographics
A group of illustration cards
A highlight reel
A website
Trophies with designed plaques
After my design process, for my solution to be a success, I know it needs to:
Inform the audience about the history of the award.
Provide information that could make the audience think about animation differently.
Open the audience’s mind up to some more obscure films.
Present all this information in a readable and engaging way.
Show how inviting and enjoyable animated media is in a fun way
By highlighting the winners for each year and providing context for those years, I have given people a glimpse of how this award has been decided, especially on years when there was controversy about the choice.
A major part of my infographics is defining the industrial impact that certain films had, which introduces new terminology regarding animation that some viewers may not have heard before.
With some of my chosen films being independent films or at least smaller productions than the winner in some cases, I believe I have given the spotlight to some lesser-known films.
My infographics serve as a cohesive way to consume my research findings after being cut down from a previously massive body of research.
Whether it be the illustrated characters celebrating their victory, my choices of color throughout, or the reel of clips from these excellent films, I believe there is a lot of fun to be had when viewing this project.
