Research Question
How Might We show the effects and importance of reading banned books?
Project Overview
I am very worried about the banning and censoring of books. Books are being removed from school curriculum and libraries for topics that are seen as unsuitable for children such as race, gender, sexuality, religion and politics. By removing these books, we are limiting children’s exposure to new perspectives, and they risk not being able to build empathy or essential critical thinking skills. Books are safe ways to experience new topics and talk through them in a non-harmful way.
Branding / Service Design / Design for Social Change
My audience is readers who value diverse perspectives and are interested in exploring controversial or banned works. My ideal users are people who understand the impact of censorship on society. They are interested promoting intellectual freedom and critical thinking through books.
I researched why books are being banned. Many bans start from a parent or board leader petition.
I investigated how the process works. There are a lot of steps that need to be taken and typically it starts as a challenge and then progresses into a ban.
I did a landscape analysis of current trends in the visual design promotion of banned materials. I wanted to understand how create a service outside of a common library.
I talked to the librarians at the Indianapolis Public Library, read student testimonials online and various online book groups to understand my audience, their preferences, and motivations.
I developed several rounds of branding and product prototypes that I evaluated with my classmates. I also asked a book related online group to look at my designs.
I designed the following components as part of my solution:
Forbidden Pages Lending Library
Set of infographic posters
Miniature banned books
Brand and brand guide
Lending Library Locator
Bookmarks
After my design process, for my solution to be a success, I know it needs to:
Inform my audience what banned books are.
Make an artifact that provides a visual example of how to get these books out into the world.
Destigmatize banned books in a unique and creative way.
Bring awareness to why books are being banned.
Get people to feel comfortable and open to reading.
Using ten of the top banned books for the 2023 school year to shed light on what a banned book can look like.
A bright and colorful lending library that promotes the interpersonal exchange of books.
Recreating famous banned books and using quotes from advocates against banning. Thus presenting them in an engaging manner that encourages reflection, discussion and action.
A creative infographic that looks like a book. It gives information on everything banned books.
The bookmarks are cute and inviting. They also give information on the national list of banned books.
