Research Question
How might we educate consumers to participate in homesteading activities so that they live a more sustainable lifestyle?
Project Overview
I am very passionate about homesteading and incorporating natural ingredients and materials into my life. I am always finding new ways to be more sustainable and creating awareness with a subscription box will encourage more people to be conscious about their lifestyles.
Branding / Service Design / Packaging Design
My audience is eco-consumers who want to learn about different categories of homesteading. My ideal users are people who want to try new hobbies that want to use sustainable materials and have less waste. They are people who want to add different sustainable practices into their home.
I researched existing subscription boxes that relate to sustainability, and other activities. They all have a singular category, but none have multiple categories of activities.
I researched different sustainable hobbies that people are starting to do. Such as making soy candles, knitting, stitching, and gardening.
I interviewed Courtney Moore, a VCD graduate, on their process of gardening, sourdough and knitting.
I developed a prototype of my physical box and my app to show to my classmates.
I designed the following components as part of my solution:
Brand Guide
Subscription Box
Package design
Mobile app/ Website
Social media campaign
After my design process, for my solution to be a success, I know it needs to:
Design needed to utilize a personal subscription box to encourage eco-consumers to incorporate sustainability and homesteading into their home.
Present a unique experience to understand homesteading and sustainability.
Make an artifact that was sustainable with compostable materials.
Show an alternative way to show a new hobby to eco-consumers without investing a lot of material waste.
Make an artifact that shows the importance of sourdough, and the tips and tricks to start it.
Different categories of subscription boxes were made to cater different homesteading activities made with sustainable materials.
The app was made to experience learning the new hobby without having to read the instructions. The interactive app included videos and a community to connect with.
The box was made from recycled material and is used as a compost box after use. The product design was made from recycled material and can be reusable.
The app shows a visual way of learning the instructions. The subscription box helps promote zero waste with pre-measured ingredients and materials.
The social media helps promote the importance of sourdough. The instruction card is how to start sourdough.
