Research Question
How might we use illustration and fantasy storytelling to represent the life cycle through personified phylum fairies?
Project Overview
I wanted to create a story with illustrations that highlight different flora, fauna and funga and how they interact and rely on each other. I created digital brushes, used painterly adobe brushes, and rich color palettes to draw viewers to my work. I wanted to combine my typographic and writing skills with my illustrative and design skills through an excerpt from my graphic novel. I’ve always wanted to create my own graphic novel to combine my love of illustration and writing in a fantastic story about flora, fauna, and funga fae.
Illustration / Type Design / Book Design
My intended audience and users are interested in graphic novels or comics and enjoy fantasy world building and unique fairy and creature character designs.
I researched and read other graphic novels to gather layout ideas
I created unique brushes and stamps
I wrote and scripted an excerpt from the story
I created dialog and decorative font families
I sketched and drew character designs and landscapes
I storyboarded and sketched spread layouts
I illustrated and finalized panels with typography
I printed prototyped a booklet
I arranged and designed final poster
I designed the following components as part of my solution:
Font Families
Physical booklet
Brand and story guide
Custom brushes and stamps
Sketches and design process
After my design process, for my solution to be a success, I know it needs to:
Inform the audience of the key role fungi play in the ecosystem and their unique abilities.
Combine typographic design and color to balance readability with aesthetics.
Display a printed booklet for users to physically hold and interact with to understand the dimensions and flow in the correct medium.
Include personalized typefaces to convey the fantasy theme and demonstrate my typographic design skills.
Include sketches and drafts to document my process and provide more story and world building content.
Demonstrate my knowledge of visual communication through the illustration and graphic design in my project.
In my character design and novel excerpt, I wanted to inform readers and nature enthusiasts that some mushrooms are bioluminescent. This is just one interesting fact out of so many that I wanted to demonstrate in my work.
This novel excerpt showcases my visual communication skills with its flowing panel layouts and eye-guiding textboxes. Creating my own font and using colorful digital brushes highlights my abilities in typography and illustration.
While I only had time to create three spreads worth of novel content, I still wanted to be able to print and bind it. That way audience members at the exhibition can hold a physical artifact and interact with my story in it's intended medium.
For my project, I chose to design my own personal fonts to fit with the tones and themes of my story as well as underscore my vector design abilities.
I wanted to make my audience aware of the background research and drafting I did to create my book cover and three spreads. I also wanted people see how my designs changed and developed over the semester, and how they are incorporated into the final product.
This passion project is a culmination of all knowledge and skills I gained throughout my time in the VCD program. My love for nature and my passion for art are perfectly integrated into my designs and I feel proud to have finally started my lifelong dream of writing a graphic novel.
