Research Question
How might we brand a community fundraising event for Indianapolis schools, utilizing illustrations to create a fun and inviting environment?
Project Overview
I am passionate about community events and world-building with illustrations. With education being under-funded in Indianapolis Public School District as my problem space, I focused my passion on creating a fun and inviting event that would bring awareness and funds to IPSD. The Summer Fun Fair, is a community carnival and fundraiser at Military Park on July 21st. This end-of-summer celebration supports educational experiences in Indy and gets residents excited for the new school year. To bring up attendance, there are various attractions for all ages, such as carnival games, thrilling rides, 21+ drink carts, live-music, a kid-zone, and more!
Branding / Illustration / Environment Design
My audience is Indianapolis residents who want to have fun and feel charitable. My primary audience are parents with children enrolled in IPS District. They want to contribute to their kid's education before the new school year and make family memories before the end of summer-break. My secondary audience are young adults with disposable income and free-time. They want to contribute to their community while enjoying the summertime.
I researched Indiana's lowest-funded school districts. Out of 288 districts, Indianapolis Public School District is ranked #11 for lowest income, while being the 2nd largest Indiana school district by enrollment.
I reached out to State Senator, Andrea Hunley (a former school principal) to discuss Indiana's under-funded education. She said "[I]t is unfortunate that we live in a state where schools are underfunded and we need creative solutions to cover what should be a governmental responsibility", reaffirming my problem space and the necessity of creative solutions like the Summer Fun Fair to support Indiana education.
I researched Indianapolis Public Schools Foundation, an organization that operates separate from the district for philanthropic efforts. I determined it as an efficient sponsor for this event, as they would support finding volunteers and be a conduit to accept funds.
I researched visual design trends for brands and events about education.
I developed several sketches and drafts of logos and illustrated assets, and I evaluated with friends, family, professors, and peers.
I referred to my professional experience designing event maps and event signage materials for the 500 Festival.
I designed the following components as part of my solution:
Event Map
Branding
Environment Pieces
Wristbands
Fliers
Website
After my design process, for my solution to be a success, I know it needs to:
Bring awareness to Indy residents of the need for outside funding for Indy Schools.
Market the charitable event as fun to attend.
Make Indy residents feel inspired to volunteer.
Utilize illustrations to create a family-friendly, fun, and inviting environment.
Work cohesively as a brand from small to large-scale deliverables.
The event's tagline, "Support Indy Schools with Fun Under the Sun", sparks awareness that Indianapolis schools need outside funding. Marketing fliers tells the impact of attendance and encourages my audience to visit the website, where they can find our mission statement and more information on IPSD's need for outside funding.
Through marketing fliers, illustrated branding, and a detailed event map, my audience can view the event as playful and fun for all ages with many various carnival attractions.
Through our website, users are encouraged to sign up to volunteer.
For branding this event, I created three illustrated characters - worm, ant, and caterpillar - to welcome my audience into their world. In their world are illustrated assets combining various themes: school, summer, and carnival.
From small deliverables like wristbands, to large deliverables like the entrance arch, branding is consistent in utilizing illustrated characters and assets.
