The Vancouver Buddha’s Light Scouts held the "2023-2024 Outstanding Scouts Award Ceremony" on the afternoon of June 30 in Vancouver Fo Guang Shan Main Shrine. The event was honoured by the presence of Venerable Chueh Chu, the Abbess of Fo Guang Shan. The ceremony included members of Scout Troop, from Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Venturers, as well as Rovers, celebrating the outstanding achievements of the scouts throughout this year. Additionally, the event expressed gratitude to the Senior Scout Leaders for their selfless dedication in promoting Buddha's Light Scouting program. A total of 40 scouts attended to witness this solemn award ceremony.
Venerable Chueh Chu praised the achievements of the Fo Guang Scouts and encouraged them to embody the scouting spirit by becoming confident, compassionate, and responsible Fo Guang Scouts.

Venerable Chueh Chu, Scout Leader Harrison and Best Beaver Scout Awardee Joshua
The ceremony began with a speech by Scout Leader Harrison Mak, outlining the qualities needed to be qualified for the Best Beaver Scout award: following the leader’s instruction, attending activities punctually, helping fellow scouts, being mindful of the surroundings. practicing self-discipline, and following rules. The Best Beaver Scout award was given to Markson Ma. Joshua and Jeremy Yang were awarded in the Best Cubs and Best Scouts respectively, each having met advanced requirements. Young Venturer Scout, Emily Tam, received the King's Venturer Award. Rover Scout, Kalman Jong, was unanimously recognized by the leaders for his outstanding performance and efforts in promoting and assisting with scouting activities, earning him an award.
In addition to recognizing the scouts, the achievements of scout leaders were also highlighted. Scout Ada Lin received the prestigious “2024 Duke of Edinburgh's Award-Gold” through the completion of the requirements for physical recreation, skills development, and voluntary service, including a four-day adventurous journey and a five-day Gold Project. With the support of senior scouts Chris Yeung and Harrison Mak, Ada went through training and ultimately completed the series of assessments to earn this honour. One of the current Beaver Scout leaders, Carolyn Wong, recently completed Wood Badge II training, which required her to pass training in adventure facilitation, fundraising, event planning, spiritual integration, and personal development before being awarded the Wood Badge.
Venerable Chueh Chu and Leader Harrison Mak with the Medal of Merit Award
This year, scout leader Harrison Mak received the Medal of Merit Award from Scouts Canada. Not only was he in charge of the Beaver Scout activities, but he also worked with other fellow members to arrange high-quality programs, and contributed to the local scouting community, providing services to both youth and adults, making outstanding contributions to all aspects of scouting activities.
With the adjournment of the award ceremony, the 33rd Richmond Buddhist Light Scout Group announced the end of its 2023-2024 term and will resume scouting activities in September. The group aims to continue the legacy of this year’s excellent achievements and further advancing, taking Buddhist Light Scouts to new heights.
