Following the education philosophy and spirit of the founder of Fo Guang Shan, Venerable Master Hsing Yun, and promoting the Three Acts of Goodness – “Do good deeds, speak good words, think good thoughts”, the Young Adult Division (YAD) of Vancouver Fo Guang Shan helped organize the “Three Acts of Goodness Children’s Summer Camp” from July 12 to 14. With a total of 35 little Bodhisattvas participating, the 3-day event concluded successfully and was full of joy and laughter. This year’s summer camp attracted little Buddhists from various places, aiming to develop a good moral character and teamwork spirit in children through a variety of activities.
Venerable Chueh Chu, Venerable Zong Qian, Venerable Miao Hsin, and Venerable You Yin attended the camp's opening ceremony. Venerable Chueh Chu emphasized the value and significance of the Three Acts of Goodness, encouraging the children to practice these principles in their daily lives, fostering good habits and teamwork spirit.
The summer camp featured a rich and diverse variety of programs, including morning lessons to start the day with cultivation and learning. Lessons on Buddhist etiquette, the practice of Humanistic Buddhism’s 3G4G (Three Acts of Goodness and Four Givings), outdoor sports events, and “Little Chefs” cooking activity where the young participants made chocolate fondue and rice balls. Through these activities, they learned the spirit of “Doing Good Deeds” by sharing the food they made with their parents. The camp also included lessons on vegetarianism and environmental protection, along with sessions on Fo Guang Shan to deepen their understanding of Buddhist culture.
This year’s summer camp invited experienced teachers and members of the Buddha’s Light International Association (BLIA) to teach, including the BLIA Vancouver Chapter President Johnny Ng, who taught the concepts of Three Acts of Goodness and Four Givings; early childhood educator Zhang Min, who instructed in lotus flower crafts; and Chung Shu-hui, who shared how to make eco-friendly cleaning solutions from fruit peels, promoting environmental awareness.
During the closing ceremony, Venerable Chueh Chu asked the little Bodhisattvas to reflect on whether they did good deeds, spoke good words, and thought good thoughts over the past three days. She emphasized that thinking good thoughts and maintaining a good heart naturally leads to practicing the Four Givings, encouraging everyone to continue practicing the Three Acts of Goodness together and make the world a better place.
The ceremony also featured talent performances by each group of the Summer Camp, including a mini Three Acts of Goodness skit and a team song performance. Led by YADs, the little Bodhisattvas performed the camp song “Reach Out”. At the end of the event, a video recap was shown to parents, capturing joyful moments at the camp and allowing the children to reflect on the knowledge they had gained. Finally, awards such as the Collective Creativity Team Award, Performance Award, and the “Good to Have You” Awards were presented, bringing the summer camp to a successful conclusion.
