On June 29, the Jing Hua Subchapter and Richmond Chapter 3 of BLIA Vancouver co-hosted a half-day “Afternoon Walking Book Club” at Richmond’s historic Steveston Fisherman’s Wharf. Guided by subchapter advisor Venerable Zhi Ping, 15 enthusiastic members participated in the event, which supported the VEGRUN “Three Acts of Goodness” Charity Run: Walk with Compassion initiative.
Under clear skies and a gentle summer breeze, the group completed a scenic 2-kilometer route passing several cultural and historical landmarks including the Seine Net Loft, Britannia Shipyards, the Chinese Bunk House, and Murakami House, while taking in the natural beauty of the Fraser River.
During a break along the route, Venerable Zhiping led a group reading of the essay “Make Good Use of Time” from Fo Guang Cai Gen Tan by Venerable Master Hsing Yun. The passage emphasized that the past is irretrievable, the present vanishes in a blink, and the future arrives swiftly so only by embracing the present moment can we give meaning and permanence to time. Through this shared reading and discussion, participants reflected on the preciousness of life and the founder’s philosophy of “living three hundred years in one lifetime” by making every moment count.
The event concluded with a cheerful ice cream social, where everyone enjoyed relaxed conversations and joy. It was not only a refreshing afternoon for the body and mind but also a meaningful opportunity to deepen friendships and reaffirm the values of time, wellness, and compassionate action.
