In response to the theme of the 2023 BLIA World Headquarters General Conference, "Coexistence and Co-prosperity," the Burnaby Chapter of BLIA Vancouver has participated in the community clean-up event organized by the City of Burnaby on July 20 at the Bonsor Recreation Complex. In addition to the 20 Buddha's Light members, 180 people from other groups have joined to contribute to the community, working together to achieve coexistence and co-prosperity.

City of Burnaby Government Explaining How To Pick Up Trash Safely and Related Safety Precautions
The City of Burnaby provided gloves, tools to collect leaves, and garbage bags for the event and explained in detail how to pick up garbage and safety precautions. The participants were then divided into five groups, each responsible for cleaning a different area.
The members carefully searched for every piece of litter they saw along the street, big or small. They discovered that the seemingly clean streets and parks actually harbored many cigarette butts, plastic wrappers, empty bottles, and much more trash hidden in the bushes. After three hours of cleaning, the garbage bags in everyone’s hands became heavier and heavier, but their hearts were filled with the joy of Dharma.
Buddha's Light Members Cleaning Up Trash
After the event, everyone realized that the principles of “Environmental and Spiritual Reservation” and “Coexistence and Co-prosperity” advocated by Fo Guang Shan's founder, Venerable Master Hsing Yun, are indeed closely related to our daily lives. Venerable Master said, “As Buddhists, especially Fo Guang members, we should embody the ‘human warmth of Humanistic Buddhism’ by giving others care, serving others in every way, bringing harmony and joy to the society and promoting coexistence and co-prosperity among all beings. The protection of the external natural environment depends on the self-awakening of human beings, which starts from the spiritual reservation.
This voluntary community service activity was driven by love for the environment. We hope to do our part in giving back to the community, beautifying the environment and purifying our hearts.
